This is definitely the path less traveled, but worth a report.

This was from Scott AFB to Mt. Pleasant and driven on a Saturday.

It was fairly painless going through St. Louis on I-64. There were the normal metropolitan potholes and poor repairs, but overall the road surface was unremarkable.

West of St. Louis, I-64 went from 4 to 3 lanes, with the two left lanes splitting off to the left and crossing over to the EB lanes, due to a long-term bridge construction project over the Missouri River. This diversion lasted about 2 miles and traffic stayed near the speed limit.

Then, west of the bridge, there was another long-term project with 2 lanes in each direction, but the far right lane was partially on the shoulder, so a lot of the time my right side tires were running on the rumble strip, which was just annoying.

At the I-64/I-70 intersection, there is a large, long-term project going on, so there were reduced speed limits, narrow lanes and rough roads.

From this interchange, we headed north on the Avenue of the Saints, which in Missouri is US-61. Overall the road was nice and smooth, with occasional rough spots, and 4 lanes of limited access. We did not hit a stoplight until Hannibal, which had several.

Crossing into Iowa, the road number becomes SR27 then later US-218. The road surface was not quite as nice as it was in Missouri, and in a couple of areas we remarked that it was getting a bit bumpy, but nothing incredibly bad.

Another nice day of driving, overall.
