Greetings

I am in the process of stripping the silicone caulk a previous owner used on my roof. I have a 9 X 12 truck camper.

I will be doing this for all vents and the seams along the perimeter. My question:

Once I have stripped and well cleaned all the caulk seams should I

1) Recaulk with Dicor self leveling caulk.
Then, 2) Tape all seams with Eternabond tape.
Then, 3) Spread a couple of layers Dicors liquid roof AFTER I prime?

Or, is this all overkill?

One more please:

Upon inspection of the vents I find the covers are cracked and the seals are not so good anymore.

Can I just replace the cover or must I replace the whole vent? Are they pretty much standard replacement size?

Thanks for your help.

They aren't universal, but there are replacement caps available for most brands of vents.

Once you get the seams cleaned up, y0u can use lap sealant (e.g. Dicor) or tape (e.g. Eternabond or Diseal). Both would be overkill, in my opinion.

Welcome to the Forum!

Now is the time to make any and all repairs / upgrades to all roof penetrations.  Replacing the vent covers is a great idea.

Be especially careful removing the silicone caulk.  It must be completely removed and thoroughly cleaned.  Most compounds - including more silicone caulk - will not stick to silicone caulk or areas with residual silicone caulk.

I'd just use Dicor. There are different styles of vent lids. Look closely for any numbers or brand name in the plastic or take it with you when buying new ones. A nice addition is a vent cover over that crank up lid. It lets you open it in the rain and is usually made of a heavier material than the flimisy crank up lid. I think mine are max air iirc but there are others.

When you replace the vent caps, replace the seal material as well. They come cut to length and can be found at RV parts stores or on Amazon.
