Does anyone have any experience on the following routes with a M/H and toad?  US 491 from Gallop, NM north  through Cortez to Monticello.    If that is not suitable how about 491 to Shiprock and then west to get to191.  Just looking for a different way to Moab.

Appreciate any help.

Jim,

Where do you see US 491? All I see on my map north out of Gallop is US 666. I've taken I-25 north out of ABQ to US 550 to US 64 at Bloomfield then US 64 to US 666 at Shiprock. 666 will take you to 191. I can recommend the Ute Mountain Casino RV Park just south of Towaoc Colorado.

The route Jim is talking about use to be called 666 but was changed to, Sorry do to CRS I nor Sam can remmeber.  We went from Gallap thru Moab a couple years ago.

Leaving Moab last year we turned onto US666 at Monticello and took it thru Cortez and Shiprock to Gallup. No issues. Just fuel up before leaving Gallup. Diesel prices were pretty high (would love to see them now  :D :D) and stations far apart.

Thanks for the replies.  We will do it then.  By the way, we had dinner with Melvin and Sharon Baker tonight and they send their best.  Tried to talk them into coming to Moab with me but could not.  He says he is saving his money after Jim Dick made him buy all the toys!! And he is still looking.

Tell them that they'll probably show up next year looking for you and drive around in circles looking for the Forum Group ;D ;D ;D

Jim:
Are you saying that 666 out of Gallup is now called 491? I know that old US 666 in Eastern Arizona was changed to US 191 many years ago due to the significince of the numbers 666 but New Mexico didn't change their portion at that time. US 666 from Clifton Arizona North for about 110 miles was refered to as the devils Highway or the devils backbone. Pure misery in a car but about five fantastic hours on a motorcycle.

Just checked Yahoo maps and it shows US 491 north to Colorado where it is still US 666. My map data bases are a couple of years old and only show US 666. 666/491 from Gallup to Monticello is good driving.

Jim,

I didn't even have to twist Melvins arm. He's an easy sell. ;D ;D

Jim it is expensive hanging out around you and Ron. I had my eye on a sweet little Nikon until Sharon raised her left eyebrow, if it had been the right eyebrow I might of pushed it. After all I am a man who knows his limitations and I didn't think that one was winable so I settled for a nice little Olympus.

Well, Melvin, there is nothing to be ashamed of with "a nice little Olympus."  Depending on mode, they have good to excellent "glass."\

Ciao,

Doug

Hi all,
Figured I would chime in on this since I live in Cortez, Co about 1.5 miles east of Hwy 666/491.
Hwy 666 was change to 491 in NM, CO? & Ut because the Governor? of NM wanted it changed because 666 was the Number of the Beast & was called by many the Devils Highway. He also got the Federal Gov in on making the change because it is a North south Hwy 7 they are mostly odd numbered Hwys. Even Numbered Hwy are east west Hwys.

I drive from Cortez down to Gallup & up to Monticello all the time to do jobs.
666/491 is good road all the way with a few rough spots.
Mileage going 666/491 from Gallup - Cortez - Monticello - Moab is about 250 miles.

The other route mentioned Gallup - Shiprock - Hwy 64 to 191 - Monticello - Moab is about 280 miles.
Plus there is Major rod work being done ON 191 between Blanding & Monticello. Expect delayS, very narrow sections & sections of dirt road.
So I Recommend taking 666/495 all the way.
Fuel will be cheapest in Gallup most likely.

That doesn't sound good. Those of us coming up from the Phoenix area would normally take 191. Could you suggest any alternates or detours to avoid the construction that aren't mega mile affairs? ??? ???

Bernie,

Plugging the trip into Mapsource, from Camp Verde, taking 160 all the way to 666/491 then up to Cortez then over to Monticello added 61 miles. If we go that way we'll go from Camp Verde to the Ute Mountain RV Park, just south of Cortez, then on in to Moab. I don't see any other way to bypass the construction.
