Is it safe or OK to run my refrigerator on LP while traveling to destination to keep the food cold?  or should I just haul it in an icechest till we get there and crank up the fridge?  I am kind of leary about running it while on the highway.  Someone please advise heading north tomorrow morning for our maiden voyage :D

Many of us leave the refrigerator run on propane while traveling.  It is not a problem.

We leave our winter home in the spring. LP is turned on, fridge is set to auto so it stays on with gas if generator is not running or we are not parked and on shore power. We do not turn the LP off until we return to Florida in the late fall and put the motorhome back in storage. We do turn the fridge off when refueling.

Do a search this one has been beat to death.  Two distinct camps;

1.  It's OK to run the refer on the highway.  There is no documented evidence of this exact activity causing a trailer fire.

2.  You are courting disaster.

If it matters, I fall into camp #1.  I've done it for 3 decades now.  Beer is ice cold when I get to camp.  :)

The only problem we have ever had running with the gas on for the refrigerator is when we come to some long tunnels.  They require that all propane tanks be turned off before entering and seldom have a turnout (other than the haszmat escort lane) to turn it off.  We now know to stop well ahead of our frequently traveled tunnel and turn the gas off.  Once clear of the tunnel, we have discovered another convenient location to stop and turn it back on.

One additional thought.  When you are refueling turn the refrigerator OFF at the control panel.  The propane can stay on.  Turning the fridge off prevents its igniter from sparking while you are pumping fuel.  Likewise turn the furnace off at the thermostat.

It can be amazing how long your propane can run your fridge & other trailer needs compared to gas grill usage if you have a little TT like ours. We camped all summer, including a lot of primitive camping, on one bottle. It is only turned off when we are hooked up to shore power.

If you decide to run with the frig off, just get it cold with all the food in it, then shut it off just before leaving. It's like a giant ice chest. No need for a separate chest. Either way you do it is ok. It's what works for you and makes you feel good. FWIW, I turn off the frig when gassing up and usually forget to turn it back on. Only once did the frig warm up while traveling and it was over 100 degrees outside.

Have Fun !
