Wonder whether anyone else has tried gardening and/or canning in their RVs. We bought an Aerogarden for our RV and it has worked great. I wanted good tomatoes so I had to buy a garden with 24" of height and only plant certain varieties but it worked great. Best use seems to be for lettuce but we've also grown flowers, herbs, and other stuff. If anyone has one fyi that Aerogarden is going out of business so support and parts will be affected.

I know canning jars are heavy (one reason we traveled with a 2nd vehicle and trailer) but with limited freezer space we needed to do something and some of the recipes we use are far better when we use our homemade stewed tomatoes. We have a vacuum sealer which I love but not much freezer space. We travel with an All American pressure canner. We had a 41 qt version before we started full timing and that didn't fit on the RV range so we sold that one and got a smaller one. I know it's not great for propane use and weight management but we do it anyways.

Normally i would be wary of buying something from a company going out of business but we bought the first one about 4 years ago and it never had any issues and is still going strong. I had trouble justifying one given the price but it definitely paid for itself over the years. Sooner or later i will need a replacement pump for our first one but they sold a lot of these so there are probably aftermarket parts available. Worst come to worst i can always use a pump from one of those electric water bowls.

These things amaze me that i can grow tomatoes in the middle of winter in colorado. The lettuce looks a little weird but that is what came with that garden on sale. I buy generic sponges that fit in the garden and use my own seeds usually.

Nothing better than the smell and taste of a home grown tomato. We haven't had much luck growing them at the stick built. Can't imagine trying to grown them in the RV. Keep us posted on the results. Maybe someday we'll give it a try.

This is a project I have considered prototyping in the past, we are not full timers, and generally travel for less than a month at a time, having said that I do have some experience with both indoor and outdoor hydroponic and aeroponic gardening.

I used to move the garden into the tv when we were moving or carried it into the house if we were home. Have to set the clock when you lose power though. Sometimes the water would spill on the truck but never had that happen in the rv.

2 eye hooks and a bungee cord hold it in the rv. Our dinette shelf is painted so i can easily fill the holes if i needed to and the dinette shelf needs a new coat of paint anyways.

If we ever get to do the next custom house i have plans to set up a hydro garden in a set of 6 in pvc pipe with holes cut in it for the plants. There is a closet planned behind the wall it will be mounted on and a single pump in a tub in the closet will circulate the water solution. Still gotta work out how to install baffles in the pipe and the covers for the pipe so it looks good. I should be able to get 3 pipe sections mounted on an 8ft wall.

Article on the news today about a school that got into hydroponics and how excited the students are to be growing their own food....

I grew up on a farm. Grew our own Potatoes. Carrots. Corn, Beans, Tomatos, Squash, Watermelons, Strawberriews, Beats, Peppers. Apples, Pears, Cherries. Beef, Pork, Chicken and milked the cows.

Warning: Political comment follows.

And shoveled political promises by the ton.

Since RV's have a humidity problem, especially during winter months, have you noticed any increase in humidity readings?
That is a great question and never thought about it before.

the only time we ever saw a humidity issue in that rv was when the temp outside was close to zero so not sure i am a good test of that. I never saw any increased signs of humidity due to the garden. Seems we had about the same amount of humidity before and after having the garden.

The garden is fully sealed and the only openings are approx 1" holes in the top where the plants grow. The roots are in the containef so only the tops grow outside the cover. Good design that limits spills when the rv is moving but it also limits what you can grow.

I dont know what info people who asked for updates are interested in but here is the latest and more info about how i use these

I am getting ready to do my first harvest on the tomatoes. Waiting another day ot 2 so hopefully i get more and they are sweeter.

I am running 3 aerogardens now, 2 that allow plants up to 24" tall and a smaller one for spices or flowers and for seed starting for the garden in the back yard. The 2 taller ones have a lot more options and full xontrol panel and they can connect to the internet but i dont understand why you would want to connect them so i never have. The full displays let you set the light schedule and shows timers for how long the current crop has been growing and how long till i need to add more plant food.

All of them blink lights when the water is getting low or plant food should be added. The more expensive ones also beep. On the smaller one i cant set a light schedule. There is no clock in it. At the time you want lights to come on you have to press and hold the light button then it cycles automaticalky going forward 16hrs on and 8 off. The other 2 are more convenient cause it track the time and you can set the lights to however many hours you want on and off. You cant set them to come on multiple times in a 24hr period though. Not sure why you would want to do that but figured i would include it as an fyi.

Set up and running is super easy. Fill the tank with water, add plant food, put your plants in the top and set the light timer or pick the type of plant you are growing and the garden has defaults for light cycle. I can adjust the lights at any time even if i pick a default setting, dim them, set them to dim at on and off to simulate sunrise and sunset, and the bigger ones have a vacation mode where the light schedule is reduced so you dont have to add water as often. That wont work well for a 2 week vacation but useful for a long weekend away.

Aerogarden used to sell their own seed pods but you can buy the sponges from other companies and use any seeds you want.

I add water about every other day and plant food every 2 weeks. The water level sensors work pretty well but the plant roots can grow into it and cause false readings. They come apart so not hard to clean em out and get them to work again after that happens.

here are some current pics of each and details. These things work really qell even if you dont have any gardening skill. They do grow plants faster but how much varies quite a bit. Jyst about anything that isnt a roit veggie will grow in these but you have to be careful to use varieties that fit in the available space. I have successfully grown burpee bush early girl tomatoes but they werent quite a large as growing them in a regular garden.

These are the cherry tomatoes from aerogarden. Good production and good flavor. These are at 77 days. Since they are indoors i shake the plant every day or 2 to fertilize the flowers and get fruit. The water level sensor is stuck showing medium and there are some dry edges on some leaves so i prob need to do a better job topping off the water.

This the aerogarden lettuce at 25 days. I have had a lot of success with using mixed leaf lettuce seeds from burpee. We rarely buy lettuce anymore. I get at least 4 heads worth yield on every batch and it is nice to pick it when you are making the salad. So far i prefer the burpee lettuce over the aerogarden.

This is the smaller garden. Trying to grow chives. Not sure if chives will work in a hydroponic garden at all but these are not. Used ferry morris seeds from hd and not a single one germinated. This is tge 2nd attempt with the rest of the seed packet. Nothing at all yet and thwse are done cause algae is growing on the sponges. Prob the seeds. Got good batches of burpee lettuce out of this garden before trying the chives.

I had some great pansies growing in these in the rv but the cats likws to sleep in them once they flowered lol

Interesting. There used to be a ski company back in pa that held a going out of business sale. Sometimes you might find a good deal but mostly it was a scam.

I bought one of the aerogardens at 1/2 price so i am pretty sure that wasnt like the ski company, but this does seem pretty weird

To all AeroGardeners,

We heard you. You love your plants, and you love your AeroGardens. That's why AeroGarden is gearing up for a fresh, new season of indoor growing, ready to reseed your love for gardening all over again!

First, an explanation, which was grounded in the reality we faced last fall. Despite creating the tabletop hydroponic gardening category 20 years ago, the market had been challenging these past few years. And that’s why we made the tough decision to wind down the business.

But your overwhelmingly positive feedback prompted us to take a second look. Just as you start your gardens anew by washing and rinsing clean, we will bring AeroGarden back in spring 2025 with an exciting energy and commitment to growth.

Even before the relaunch, we’re extending many of the things that made AeroGarden great. Here’s what you can expect in the near term:

Our seeds to be 100% guaranteed to grow.

The AeroGarden App to be supported and updated for gardens and grow lights.

Your AeroGarden account and history of growing to remain in effect.

Our products to be available on Amazon without interruption.

We have many details to work out as we refresh AeroGarden, and we’ll share them as soon as possible. Like a budding relationship, we are taking things slow. We want to get this right - for you. Because we love our plants, too.
