Hi,

I have a RV for sale on RVusa.

I received an inquiry via text with some very legitimate type questions. I quickly received back the below response . Looking for any suggestions of how I can tell if it’s legit or not. He did send me a copy of his South Carolina licensed. I looked up his phone number and it has a CO area code, which today , you see lots of people who have moved but kept their phone. Any suggestions. Would be appreciated.
Thank you

“I appreciate your prompt response. I'm pleased to confirm that your asking price aligns well with my budget, and I'm ready to proceed with the purchase. Due to my tight schedule as an event coordinator, I prefer not to make the payment in cash in person.
I am confident in the condition of the RV, and my son, who is a mechanic, will take care of any necessary fixes, To facilitate the transaction, my financier will be sending a cashier’s check from my local bank. Once the check clears in your account, I have arranged for a mover to handle the pick-up and manage the title transfer.
To expedite the process, kindly provide the following information:
Full Name:
Address:
Firm Price:
Thank you.

I saw a $10,000 cashier's check bounce. Not worth the paper they are written on.

A wire transfer is the only way to do it or cash and if you do cash get a pen that checks for counterfeit bills.

Also, do not offer, and do provide if asked for any type of ‘CarFax’ or any of the plethora of company’s to run vehicle reports, if they want one, they run those reports when they are personally viewing the item.

Bank checks, and cashiers checks can for forged.
Reply back; no sale until prospective buyer(or representative ) views the item in person. All sales cash only. In other words: USD in greenbacks form.
Tks…he does say he would wait until it clears my bank . It’s $22.5k , that’s a lot of cash.

Forged checks can sometimes take weeks to finally come at you. Insist on cash only. If they truly want it, they can get the cash.

It does seem a suspicious response. He's willing to buy sight unseen and send a large check to a stranger who could easily just take the money and leave town. Doubtful he is that naive!

If you choose to accept it, wait until that check has fully cleared. Your bank will accept it "subject to collection" and can take the funds back later if a problem develops. As Mr Lars said, that can be several days after the check initially seems to clear. You might ask your banker how and when you will know a check has irrevocably cleared. Better yet, insist on a wire transfer rather than a check.

I agree, although I did have a cashiers check when selling my motorhome, we had our bank call his bank, (not a number provided by the buyer) and determine the funds were actually available.

However, a wire transfer is a much better way to go, that is how we bought that motorhome.

The text itself sounds like it's been made by AI. I expect at some point during the communication, should it continue, that they will ask you to pay something or ask for some personal details that you shouldn't share. Also don't download anything.

I'd be very cautious but it may be worth asking for more information from them.

Disappointing when you're hoping for a sale though

Yep, that is what scammers depend on. Quick sale and no time to think about it. Make the offer too good to pass up, and make up a reason that they can't appear in person for the transaction. Run.
