As noted in my signature, I am planning on buying a 5th wheel next spring. I have found one, maybe, at a good price.
So, even though I can?t really park one in the near term, I am exploring buying it. The trailer is only 4 hrs from home so we can drive out and check it out. I do plan on a professional inspection before buying.

The problem is that I have no place to store it at my home. Our plan had been to buy in the spring, bring it home and block a driveway while we load it with what we need to live in it for possibly 6 months between the realtor throwing us out to ?stage? the house and buying the new home. We would try and find a campground not too far away with a seasonal site and move there for the duration.

If we buy soon, I need to store it for the winter. I know I need to winterize it and either pull the batteries of drop by and charge em up every month.

Since I have never done this before, I don?t know what I don?t know about RV storage places.

Whew!

So, educate me?

Thanks

It boils down to $$ and what is available in your area.  Anything from an open parking area to covered and heated storage buildings. Most RVs end up parked outside, winterized, and batteries at least disconnected and maybe removed. Some regions have plenty of empty warehouses or barns and prices are low, while in others even a vacant lot is dear.

Batteries may be a non-issue anyway - chances are the batteries on a used rig will need replacement, so you may not care how they winter.

In New England when al the country fairs are done, they rent out spaces in their barns for boat and RV storage. So much per foot.

Maybe the current owner can allow you to leave it at their location until the spring?

I have mine in a storage lot. The lot is fully barbed wire fenced, has secure access from 6AM -11PM 7 days/week.  Outside those hours they run dogs in there.  They have rodent control, fresh water and a sani dump.  Works for me - not cheap though at $100/month...

Good news. Just got a message from the owner and ha said it is at the dealer where he bought it and it is paid through the winter. He says I could just leave it there.

For those that have to store their RV off site, how far away is it?

My current and oh so wonderfully close just raised prices from $70 two years ago to $136 ouch.

Hubby loves having it 5 minutes away. I’m seeing prices around $65-75 if I’m willing to drive 1 1/2 hours. Ughh. No more quick drop off or pick up stuff.

Trying to decide if it’s worth it. Opinions please!

That sounds cheap at $136!

What are fuel costs for getting there and back. Is it as secure?

If you leave it at the dealer, make sure you insure it for theft and damage. I can envision an employer at a dealer driving around one of those little fork lifts and backing into it. Once it is sold, I doubt if a dealer really would care enough to make sure it is not damaged by one of his employees or another customer.

We live in the Twin Cities Minnesota metro.

Uncovered outdoor storage prices in the metro range from mid-$80s to $150+ per month for a travel trailer our size (33.5' ball to bumper, so I wouldn't want anything shorter than, say, 35 feet).

We rent a parking space in a fenced, gated RV storage with on-site water and dump station for mid-$60s per month, but it's a ~40 mile drive one way. It is outside the metro in a small town. However, even the closest storage lot (the ones in the mid-$80s range) are a ~10-20 mile drive one way in other suburbs. If I wanted 5 minutes away, in the same suburb I live in, I'd be paying $150-200 per month.

When not in storage, we park in our 200' driveway, with one of our cars behind the trailer, (since the trailer blocks the drive). We do this when we are loading / unloading or doing other DIY service (such as winterizing). I plug it into the garage outlets if I need power, and I converted one of our sewer clean-outs to a tank dump connection, so I can do such things as cleaning the tanks or winterizing at home.

The lot we use is excellent, clean, secure, all gravel, level, with wide parking spaces. I'm very satisfied with the storage facility. It would be better to be closer, but moving to one of the 10-20 mile facilities would add ~$250 per year, and the in-town lots 5 minutes away are darn near triple the cost, so we deal with the inconvenience.

BTW, pulling the trailer up our up-hill, slightly curved, 200' driveway has given me great practice in backing this thing up! I can now back it all the way down, between our two end-of-drive brick light posts, and out into the suburban residential street without hitting the mailbox just across the street or hitting the light post as the truck swings around, and park it on the curb with no or maybe one pull-forward to re-set!

You haven't said where you are located but RV storage prices are increasing in most areas of the country, at least partly due to the cost of operating such facilities has also increased. Our RV storage lot that is in a far eastern suburb of Dallas went from $75/month for outside storage to $100/month and for covered storage from $135 to $150, about a year ago. There is another RV storage yard that is about as near as any to the heart of Dallas that offers covered storage for $300/month and uncovered for $150-$200, depending on the size. The link for this one also has a waiting list for what you need.

Our storage facility is about 10 miles away, 20 minute drive. It is gated with secure codes that are monitored. The lot is paved and has multiple cameras installed. The owner drives through at least once a day and has remote access to the cameras. He also gets a notification when the gate is opened.
The lot is part of regular storage facility, but the lot is out of site of the main road.
One nice feature is the local magistrate's office is at the entrance.
