Slide toppers suggestions needed

We have a permanently parked fifth wheel that has three slides with toppers. My concern is when the wind blows hard. Pulling in the slides is not an option in our situation. The popping they do is annoying, but mostly I'm worried about damage. I've heard heard about beach balls between the topper and slide, and straps across the toppers. I'm thinking about doing the straps, but don't know what the downside, other than being ugly, is to that idea. Anyone have any suggestions other than taking them off and putting a roof over everything?

Let me bump this for you.

My approach would be to do nothing and see how long the toppers lasted, then maybe add a permanent cover.

I tried beach balls and pool noodles.  The wind moved them around and ended up causing the water to pool in one area. That caused water to seep around the edges of the topper and leak into the slide.  Did away with the noodles and the leak stopped.  I'd go with Grashley's method.

Thanks for the replies. So far, I'm following the Preacher's suggestion. Had 40+ mph gusts, and they're still doing ok.
