Our school had "The strap" it was like a thick belt and the principal would instruct us to put out our hand and he would smack it. It made your hand go numb but left no mark. Our parents trusted the teachers and principal so there was no illusion that we were innocent and thus we never told our parents we got the strap for fear of getting further punishment in the home.
I think it would be wrong to say this method works and that method doesn't. I think each parent has to figure out which method works for each child. It won't always be the same. A loss of my freedom for a week was a big deal to me and the threat of being "grounded" usually kept me in line but not so for my brother who needed a more corporal threat to curtail his tendencies.
