Splitting lanes

But you will not hear a roar from my electric motorcycles! But it shouldn't matter what you see, the bike should be able to move out of your way in time before you can move more than an inch or two.

I always assume nobody sees me. Especially when they are in the middle of sending their important text message about what somebody wore to a party or whatever.

But I ride electric because motorcycles should be seen and not heard! That is "should be" but too often are not.

Didn't think about EBs. That makes it even more dangerous sneaking up on me.

I rode bikes for 20+ years when I lived in or near a city. When I moved 23 miles away from the city it was no longer practical. I had 2 miles of potholes to get to the interstate. Potholes are a nuisance in a car but a death sentence on a bike.

When Triumph revived the Bonneville I was dying to buy one and I was living only 1 mile outside city limits. But my wife insisted at my age I would literally be dying if I rode one  But I've read the Norton Commando is coming back and I may not be able to resist that urge :)

The big problem on I-80 is when trucks are next to trucks and the traffic is stopped. Then a motorcycle cannot go anywhere until one of the lanes move again, hopefully not each at the same slow speed.

Cars rarely get in my way and many even move over to give more clearance to motorcycles. In CA, I think most car drivers know about the legal lane-spitting here. and respect it.

Perhaps many of them also own a motorcycle.

Or perhaps a car ain't 8' wide and a truck is.

l there are many states where it’s not prohibited
Yes, in the very first post here it says for a few states:

IOW, you could get a traffic violation even when safe, unlike here in CA.

With 1 million miles on Harley Davidsons,,(mostly in California) and having owned a dealership at one time,, also in CA., I have done my share of "splitting".. With an average of 11 miles per hour freeway speeds,, its the way to make better time,(at your own risk).. I actually went for 28 months with out putting my feet in a car,, and when I did my wife was driving and scared the **** out of me!.>>>Dan ( My best year was 46K miles )

Actually, in Ca the law is written to give the LEO some discretion: if he thinks you're splitting in an "unsafe" manner he can, indeed, write a citation. So, if traffic is doing 0-10 mph and you're splitting at 75 mph you're liable to get a ticket...

They can always call it "excessive lane changing" and often do..>>>Dan
That's why many riders insist on calling "lane sharing" instead of "lane splitting" - if you're not crossing over the lane marker then you're "sharing" a lane and that's what the law is written as...

Motorcycles have their safety advantages also, such as NO blind spots.

There is more evidence that lane splitting reduces accidents, and now other states are considering making it legal.

Man when you like something you pull out all the stops.....
There is ABSOLUTELY NO safety advantages to riding a motorcycle -- and -- splitting lanes does not reduce accidents vs a motorcyclist waiting in traffic in their place in line like everyone else and ten safely pass's when traffic is flowing again.

Yes, I think in any state you can be pulled over for driving in an unsafe manner, regardless of how "legal" otherwise.

I will never have to worry about that when I lane split here in CA.

I somewhat agree, I think it is best to ride a bit scared.

But there are some safety advantages, such as the ones I already mentioned here, such as no blind spots. And the fact I would be dead today if I were in a car on Hwy 152 that time.

This is getting kinda dumb, but no one knows how that could of or would of ended up if it were a car.

We were in Phoenix for a week earlier this month, and lane splitting is legal there, every time my Wife saw someone doing it, she about blew her top. She would start ranting and raving, cussing like a drunken sailor.
The two things I try to avoid; being in the same car, and grocery shopping with my Wife.
I swear, those two things, she took lessons with The Devil, and what he learned from her………….

In Texas you can legally go 80 mph without a helmet on a motorcycle, but can be ticketed for being in car going 5 mph without a seatbelt.

I don't think it is speculation that a car head-on into two 18-wheelers in the days before airbags would be deadly.

One of my Fellow MSP dispatchers.. The semi Drivere crossed into the oncomming lane and he was not able to swerve in time and ....... Well. Even air bags were of no help.

Although Lane Splitting is not legal in Indiana, I have on a few occasions been sitting in traffic when a motorcyclist will come zooming by on either the shoulder or a "lane split" beside me. When that happens it absolutely shocks the **** out of me! If traffic were actually moving, I'd probably rear end the guy in front of me from shear panic!

I have no intensions of EVER going to California. It's too insane there, on many, many levels!
