I’ve gotten 3 of these “action required” messages:

We've upgraded the Pause feature to include Standby Mode, so you can stay connected even when you're not using your regular service plan. For $5 per month, you’ll now have unlimited low-speed data, perfect for calls, texts, and instant reactivation during emergencies or in dead zones. You'll also continue to receive software updates to keep your system up-to-date.

To opt in and stay paused, click Confirm Standby Mode or follow the steps below before 09/13/2025. If no action is taken by that date, your paused service line will be cancelled.

I’ve read that if you let this be canceled there’s going to be a reactivation charge.

So in order to stay paused with Starlink, you have to pay $5 a month. It was free and now it’s not to put the Starlink away until the next time you travel.

FWIW

Do not have Starlink yet. The pause feature is one of the attractions for our mobile/RV use. Starlink discontinued their Pause Mode (zero data) with Standby Mode $5/month cancel at no cost and restart service on an available plan whenever you’re ready with unlimited data at 2g speed supportiing calls, texts. light browsing and software updates and instant reactivation.

Unclear if Starlink will cancel account but clearly stated: "We recently upgraded pause to include Standby Mode. Previously, the pause feature offered zero data at no cost. If pausing with Standby Mode does not meet your needs, you are able to cancel at no cost and restart service on an available plan whenever you’re ready,"

A reactivation fee appears due to customer speculation not supported by their cancel at no cost and restart service on an available plan whenever you’re ready

Starlink Replaces Free Pause Mode With $5 Monthly Charge vs

For me the Standby Mode is not total negative and may actually be a positive.

I have jumped on that offer immediately. The best reason for me is that I often paused my service if I was at a location that my other router filled the need at a cheaper rate. BUT, when I went to a remote location to camp after being paused for a few months, l quickly learned that I needed signal to log on and un-pause my account. That may require a hour long trip back to civilization to log on and reactivate the account. That made no sense to me. So I wrote the customer service and explained my problem. So now for $5 my service is always "on" , and I just tried it today. I set up the dish and plugged in the router. The service became live in seconds, and I was off and running.

For me it was an ideal resolution. At a recent park I stayed at, I needed to buy into the on site paid service ($15 minimum) just to turn my service back on. So $5 is a deal for me.

Do you have to contact them when you move, like you do with Dish? I've got the Roam unlimited plan, but I've been in the same spot since I activated it. Moving back to Arkansas for the winter at the end of October.

No. Starlink is a moving satellite dish. As long as you have clear sky you can connect. That’s the beauty of it though I do like to tell them on surveys that Sirrius works even when there’s trees in the way. If you need to pause service, you just login to the starlink website and “manage your account”.

Probably not going to be necessary. My longest stretch of travel is the route between Arkansas and California. Usually, 5 or 6 days straight and then I sit for the season. Sometimes I take the scenic route, but that only doubles the travel time. Not worth pausing the service for that.

That's the beauty of it. Pull out the phone, open the app and operate stand by, on or off. And since the service is prorated, every day that I don't need full speed I save money. I still carry a T-Mobile whole home router that gets good speeds for streaming in a lot of places for $50 a month. Now there have been rumblings from T-Mobile that they may restrict service to your home area. If they do, I will cancel it and use SL full time when traveling.

To clarify... if you're one week into a new month of service and you want to pause, you're still charged for that entire billing month, right?

Nope, I just re-activated today as I am in a remote location. My billing date was 8/26, but I was on standby. As soon as I activated I received a notice from my bank card that Starlink charged my card $103 instead of $165 that would have been due on 8/26.

But now that I am active, I could go on standby again tomorrow but my full speed service would continue until 9/26. If I let it charge on the 26th, I will have another full month of service at the full price of $165. So even if you unplug the service and go on standby day after you pay your full payment, you will not get a refund for unused time.

Ok, got it. I wasn't quite sure what you were describing but I see that we're on the same page as to how turning off/on/pause/resume works with Starlink.

Our 4 month trip last year was our first with Starlink. As it turned out, we also had a pretty decent cell signal along the way at parks we stayed at.

I kept track of down/upload speeds between cell hotspot and SL and as you would expect, SL was always considerably faster. But in actual use, even the cell hotspot was satisfactory. Made me want to find some remote site with ZERO cell so I could feel better about handing over the $$$ to SL. ;)

Our SL will be packed away until we travel later this year. I assume one doesn't have to be connected to switch to "Standby Mode"?

I got those same messages, and missed the part about a reactivation fee. I just submitted a ticket to confirm if there will be indeed be a reactivation fee.
This is the response I received from Starlink:

"You can cancel and re-activate service at any time at your own convenience. Cancelation works just like how pause works for you currently. When resuming service from a cancelation, there is no additional fee beyond the standard re-activation fee for your service plan's price. It is the same bill you would pay if resuming from paused service."

After using Boost Mobile for a couple of years and putting up with their terrible connectivity 10 miles outside any city, I switched to Verizon. Then they became to expensive to stay with, plus we needed new phone s and they wouldn't do squat for a good coutomer.

I switched toT-Mobiles Magenta plan a few years ago and still enjoy the price and service. I also enjoy their home Internet at a locked in price of $35 on autopay, vs Specscum at $85 and worst customer service in the utilities industry.

At one time I had both T-Mobile and Sprint depending on which of two devices I used.
Then.. The two became one.
Now I use T-mobile on the road and Spectrum cable here in the apartment.
Tried T-mobile at home but ....
Most ISPs block selected ports.. Two of the ones T-mobile at home blocks. I need open.

Fun fact After the spectrum or T-mobile Modem/router I have my own Router and both are "Statley" routers A known hacker offered to help me set up a piece of gear (I finished set up as we were chatting needed not his help) and complained he could not access it. Offered to help me set it up so he could.. I thanked him, told him I'd gotten it (Even as we spoke) and ... SMILED.
