Members confirm that a Starlink Roam account can be used both at home and while traveling, but there are trade-offs. The Roam plan is more expensive than the residential plan and may experience slower speeds in congested areas due to lower network priority. Some RVers keep their Roam plan on standby for $5/month when not traveling, which allows for basic connectivity and easy reactivation, while others prefer to cancel and restart as needed, noting that reactivation requires internet access...

One thing to note on useage, remember that there are other things that are using your internet beyond streaming and general internet useage, i.e. browsing, email, etc. All platforms, Android, iOS, MacOS and Windows send a lot of telemetry that you don't see but eats into your usage.

Thanks, I was just fooling around with it. This still works, but the app will not let me sign in at all, goes to the startup screen for a new account.

I figure I better not do a reset until I get in a location where I have another type of connection. Or is there a way? DonTomSL (my SSID) still shows on this computer, but says "can't connect try again later" on the app and that is under "saved networks" otherwise doesn't show at all. I guess that means it is well hidden on all computers accept this Windows 11 computer where the app will not run.

IOW, I have no clue what I am doing!

Any ideas to get a working app back?

Not a big problem as long as this one still works.

When you say the app, do you mean the Starlink app? Have you tried cycling power on your Starlink router?

The Starlink app needs to be connected to the internet in some way. You can view some stuff like service quality, etc. when connected to the internet through your cell phone...no wifi. If you are connected to the Starlink router through wifi, you can manage the router.

The dish does not need the router. The router is just there to give you a wifi connection.

Hard to say for sure what's going on.

Have you logged in to your SL account (https://starlink.com/account/home) online to see if there's any kind of notice there?

I know I had always used SL in "Bypass mode" which I turned on in the app and just connected the SL to the router's WAN port and it worked well.

When that router died until I got a replacement, still needing the Internet I reset the SL. From there it was pretty easy to set things up again without my router in place. When I got a new router, back to Bypass.

Of course if you haven't already tried rtrainer's thought of restarting everything, that's a logical place to start.

Yes, I took a chance and did that, wondering if I would lose my connection here. But that made no changes after it powered back on.

I cannot get to the Starlink App on my Android phones as I cannot connect to the wireless from the Starlink because it doesn't show. And manually putting in the info (SSID & PW) just says" cannot connect".

On this win 11 computer I am now using, it shows I am connected to "DonTomStarLink". It also shows my "Hidden Network".

But when I check for available wireless networks on my Android, with the StarLink App, it shows neither one.

So when I go to the Starlink App, it says "check your internet connection". The one what is so well hidden it will not even show as hidden, Shows nothing except for another RVer's SSID that just arrived here. So I know it is just mine that is not showing up on my Android, but shows up here.

I didn't realize such a thing was possible. But the only thing that now works is this computer, I can no longer make a phone call via wireless or anything else.

Why would only this Win 11 computer see the two wireless connections?

Yes, but there, I only see basic account stuff after I sign in. Nothing about hidden networks or anything like that.

I am happy that at least this computer works, that stops me from trying a total reset until I get to where there is another type of web connection in case I get things more screwed up than they already are.

Strange how only this Win11 computer can see the wireless In fact, it is showing three, "Hidden Network" "DonTomStarLink" and also "DonTomStarLink2". I have no idea how the "DonTomStarLink2" came from. It just started to show up ONLY on this computer.

NONE of the three others I have here (Chromebook and two Androids) show under the Wi-FI. Same fro the TV. SO I will not be able to watch the TV until this is figured out.

I just do not understand how these symptoms are possible. I would think if one computer can see a wireless, all those in range would, but only this Windows 11 notebook can see anything from the Starlink since I played around with the hidden network.

After doing a lot of reading about similar problems where a SSID is seen only on some computers but not others while all well in range, and also deciding it was little risk to reboot the router, I did such and now all is back to normal!

Corrupted data from the wireless router can cause such problems because some are more sensitive to the corrupted data on the wireless than others.

I had a couple of backup ideas ready just in case, such as a hike up to the top of the hill with the mini where I can get a Verizon connection.

And the TV is working again! I am watching it right now.

I just wonder about the timing. As soon as I try to connect to the hidden network, the wireless router in the Starlink went nuts. Why then?

I am confused as to why you are trying to connect to a "hidden" network. Did you create a SSID and then tell the router to not advertise it? If the router is not advertising it,it will not be accessible unless you know the SSID and manually connect to it.

It was just to experiment with it. It was the very first time I tried to log into a hidden network. But right at that same instant, everything went haywire in ways I didn't realize were possible. Then I did a lot of web searching with this one computer that still worked. I have four others here besides this Win 11 computer. A Chromebook and three different tablets. Only this computer would show the Starlink's SSIDs. Now they all see every SSID since I rebooted the WL router on the Starlink.

I have had Roaming for several years, when the monthly charge was $115. Shortly after I got it, the charge went to $135, and then $165. They said they would make up for the last increase by allowing you mobile access. That didn't help me since I had one of the older models that's too big to set on the dashboard of the coach and point it out the windshield. When they began charging $5 a month to "hold" your account, they tried to sell it by saying that if you didn't pay the monthly fee, you might not be able to renew your account because there may be too many users in your area. If you have roaming, that doesn't matter, so I called horse hockey. I cancel my account after every trip, and use it only while on the road. If you have the app on your phone, you can start your service easily.

A warning when doing this: I'm on the road right now, finishing a five-week trip through the Midwest. I started my service around the 15th of April after I got to my first destination, and paid $104 instead of the monthly $165 because regardless of when you reactivate your service, your billing period will always stay the same as it was the first time you activated your account. Mine is on the 6th of the month, so I paid for only a partial month. Since I'm on my way home right now, I decided to cancel the service before the next billing cycle began on the 6th of May. I tried to cancel it the night before, but was informed my service would continue until June 6th.

I submitted a service request to Starling, asking why I was being charged for a month I would not use the service. They responded and told me that I was too late to cancel the service for the month of May because the invoice for the next month had already been prepared. They didn't tell me when invoices drop, but I am under the impression that you need to cancel your service at least a week before the next billing cycle. Starlink surprised me by refunding the $165 that had already been charged to my credit card, but told me the service still wouldn't be canceled until June 6th, if I wanted to use it in the meantime. I viewed that as good customer service. I know that if I want to pay the $5 per month to keep the account active, I can avoid this hassle. However, I feel Elon has already made enough money off of me with his price increases, and he doesn't need to send more satellites into LEO because we're going to suffer a Kessler event without them.

Concur 100% and do the same. I will add my understanding was $5 monthly fee allowed starlink to stay connected and continue to get updates as well.
This does me no good with rig in storage winterized with no power and starlink laying on the bed. LOL

Some great info. Thanks for posting!

Wondering if any SL users here who have their account on "hold" have continued to use it with the reduced bandwidth? I've heard different account as to how useful that limited bandwidth while paused actually is in practice.

I've tested with my Mini account on standby. Email was ok unless it contained pictures. They load eventually, but it takes awhile. Browsing usually timed out before the pages finished loading.. I didn't bother to try streaming.

My thought is to get the roaming service and use it at home when not out in the camper. Billing address is static, no having to update location, just use mini att the house. See any issues with this?

What do you mean mini att?
I would use my Starlink at house as well. But when I leave I need internet for house security cameras. So I just leave Starlink in camper and use local internet at the house.

This is why we have both Starlink in the motorhome and cable internet at the house. I can check the cameras and security system at the house, set the thermostat, etc. Handy. Luckily we have a community owned utility company that is both competent and cost competitive.
