Stockton, CA to Coburg, OR in Winter

I need to go up to Coburg in the next week and am wondering what is the best route and other things to be aware of.

Questions that I have, among others are:

1. Go I-5 all the way and watch the weather?

2. Go over to US 101 and take it up to OR 126 and back to i-5?

3. If I go I-5, what are the OR chain laws?  Are you always required to carry chains at this time of year or only when bad weather is imminent?

4. And, of course, any other things I'm probably forgetting to ask about!  ???

I'll be traveling in a 45 ft MH with toad.

Go I-5 all the way.  That is the main drag for the west coast and both Oregon and California will bust their tails to keep it open.    101 is a lesser route and is badly exposed when a winter storm hits.  Not the best winter route. 

There is chain control on Siskyou summit.  I would take chains as a general precaution.

Towing a toad I do not worry about chains. If chains are needed its a good time to pull off and let them clear the roads. You are not required to carry them if the roads are clear.

I have been down 101 in January and it is more work than I-5 but certainly beats getting caught in a blizzard in the Siskyous.

Stay on I-5 not only because of snow and/or bad weather; it's to close to Winter.  We have driven our MH to Coburg in Winter.

We are having a couple of snow storms hitting the passes and that includes the Siskyous on I-5 this week.  The weather will improve by Tuesday or Wendsday.  The rule is anything over 10.000 lbs and towing must have chains or traction tires when posted other wise you need to carry them over the passes.  The forcast is 6 to 12 inches of snow each day, that means that chains or traction tires will be required.  Even the coast range is getting snow this week.  The best way to get to Coburg would be to go up 101 to Florence and go over to Eugene, the pass on that highway is less than 1000 feet.  Oregon Dept. of Transprotation has a great web site for winter travel, including cameras all over the state.
