Greetings from Texas. I just wanted to say hi and drop in and lurk for a bit. I recently inherited my father's '04 BT Cruiser. I'm really new to this, but super exited. I am now the 3rd owner of a very well maintained class C with low mileage. I have a lot to learn and a million questions (i'll space those out). My parents were midwest snowbirds, and they took meticulous notes. I have fuel logs going back over 10 years. I have a manual for everything and anything.  I'm still a long way from retirement, so I will be able to get out a few times a year. My job allows various times of the year, so I can stay away from the crowded weekends. We've done a week at a state park earlier in the month, and I learned a lot, but realized I have a way to go. Headed out to the Marfa area next week with my partner and maybe the cat (undecided). Anyways, looking forward to learning from y'all and maybe even say hello on the road.

Consider staying at Davis Mountain State Park about 35 miles north of Marfa.

I second that. We go there at least once a year and love it. The one thing we do not like is the perpetual burn ban. One year it was pouring rain and the fire pit had 2? of water in it so I asked the park ranger if the ban was lifted. He said, ?Nope. It isn?t up to us, it?s up to the county. So, if camping isn?t camping to you without a camp fire consider  Balmorhea-I?ve never seen a burn ban there and you get the best of both worlds because you can drive up to Davis Mountains, the observatory, etc.

Cheers and happy camping.

I love a campfire as much as the next guy, but it's not a deal breaker for me, though. Living in the Hill Country, I'm used to them. I think I have found a spot in Terlingua. My friend is playing a show at the starlight theater there, so I think I'll be there at least one night. I've been there a handful of times, and absolutely love it. I've been to McDonald Observatory once for a star party, but didn't know about the state park there. I think that might be a really great idea.

We were on the bike one time wanting to stop off at Terlingua, we missed it. I asked the wife, ?you see Terlingua yet??  She said, ?No.?. Next thing we know we?re headed north and never saw it. Lol. Maybe one day.

The Balmorhea state park campground is closed for renovations, I think the estimated re-opening will be spring of next year.

Whoa!  The entire park?  Hadn?t heard that. Dang.

From the Balmorhea State Park web site:

Pool, Camping and Lodging Closure Alerts

June 15, 2018 - The swimming pool is closed for repairs. Camping and lodging is not available due to renovations. Until the pool reopens, the park only has the picnic area open for daytime use, from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., or sunset, whichever comes first. The campground and San Solomon Springs Courts are scheduled to reopen after mid-March 2019.

Sad. Hopefully it will reopen on time. Nice park.
