According to this YouTube video, engines are using thinner oil to help meet federal fuel mileage standards. This means bearings need tighter clearances to maintain the oil film, going from millimeters to microns. Manufacturing cleanliness hasn't kept pace, leaving contaminants in new engines that used to harmlessly pass through rod and main bearings getting caught and destroying them.
