Hey, I read this on Facebook so apparently EVs are doomed, right?? :)

BMW is making a bold move in the world of sustainable transportation by shifting away from traditional electric vehicles (EVs) and investing heavily in hydrogen engine technology. The company has achieved major breakthroughs in hydrogen fuel cell development, positioning it as a cleaner and more efficient alternative to battery-powered EVs.

Unlike electric cars that depend on heavy lithium-ion batteries, hydrogen-powered vehicles use lightweight fuel cells, allowing for faster refueling times and a longer driving range—solving two of the biggest challenges facing EV owners today.

BMW is also highlighting the environmental benefits of hydrogen-powered cars. These vehicles produce zero emissions, with only water vapor as a byproduct, making them a game-changer for clean energy and sustainable mobility. With this strategic shift, BMW is positioning itself as a leader in the future of green transportation, paving the way for eco-friendly innovation in the automotive industry.

It's still an EV, the only difference being where the electrons come from. There's a reason there are way more EV's than hydrogen cars. Whether you burn H2 or oxidize it is secondary to creating storing and transporting it. You can't get there from here - no one has cracked that nut yet. Then even if you did, the production of fuel cells is crazy expensive, generally due to using precious metals like palladium. So other than that, hydrogen cars work great. Not sure if this is click bait or marketing deflection but it's BS. This has been the selling point since at least the 70's and nothing has changed.

The media has been harping about hydrogen fuel cells and combustion for years. Still noting being manufactured.

The new hype is a two stroke ammonia engine. What could go wrong there? I worked with anhydrous ammonia at HP for a while. Very nasty stuff.

Very nasty stuff.
Any type of stored energy is "very nasty stuff". Making the stuff run a motor is the easy part. Making it safe is the difficult part.

IMO, that is why we have endless EV battery vaporware that almost never hits the market. Designing the amazing battery to do everything needed is the easy part. Making it safe to be around when it charges at a half million watts is the difficult part.

Take my Chevy Bolt for an example. They had batteries blow up in the past so GM had them redesigned to be safe. And then some of those new "safe" batteries blew up with normal usage, putting my 2022 Chevy Bolt on a battery recall list. If GM tech engineers cannot figure it out until thousands of cars are on the road, who can design a new better EV battery to be safe?

And the other issue, is the only real safety test is when thousands of them are on the road.

Where on earth would you get re-fueled if you had a hydrogen operated vehicle and say.... you were traveling from Ohio to California? Where?

Well, I was talking to some folks back around the turn of the Century who were working on designs for Hydrogen powered vehicles.
It has been a while, but they are finally off the ground. Battery powered vehicles are here to stay, by I think that by Midcentury, Hydrogen will be the fuel of the day. Assuming we survive the next decade.

I too have been reading about that for a LONG TIME. Remember the Hindenburg That was Hydrogen.

The good news is when Hydrogen burns it's the cleanest burning fuel there is .. You get.. Water.. Pure Water. That's all folks.

And when you watch the Hindenburg crash notice the base of all of the flames are rising up, away from the people on the ground. If it was another fuel the flames would have flowed downwards towards the ground.

Our goal is to build a Pr hydrogen car that overcomes the problems faced by the electric car. Fast and easy charging (less than 4 minutes), significantly increased road range, and the cleanest possible carbon footprint are our priorities. And they have all become reality with the hydrogen SUV.
