Hi all, my wife and I are looking at a new Thor Geneva 28VT to purchase. I did a simple online search for Thor and it seems they have had some build quality issues a few years ago. I'd like to get some opinions on Thor's C class motorhomes regarding issues and or satisfaction. Thanks in advance!

Thor has a bad reputation. Partly deserved and partly not imo. They started with airstream and those are still good from what i have seen. They tend to buy companies and then force the companies into their manufacturing model so some brands have suffered. They bought drv and started putting the cheapest fixtures in them without an option to upgrade.

What Class C would you recommend? Looking for 30' long or so with 1 or 2 slides and would tow a 24' enclosed race trailer.

Do your research before you buy anything. If you can find an owners group for that rv you might learn about common issues for that make and model. Unfortunately rvs of all brands can come with a lot of issues and you cant go by reputation.

if you are able to research and put together a robust pre delivery inspection checklist and crawl over and under, inside and out every inch of the rv looking for problems. I posted one for towables in the rvlifer thread in the under the shade tree forum. It is a good idea to have any rv inspected by an nrvia certified inspector before you buy one. They can save you lots and lots of money and aggravation.

There is no easy answer for that. Everyone travels differently in an rv and values different things so it is a personal choice on rv and floorplan. With a 24ft trailer you may have trouble finding a class c that will handle that. It depends on the weight. Maybe you could find a superc that might handle it but they arent cheap.

If you share more info about what you plan to do with the rv and how much stuff you will need to carry we could help more. For example are you towing vehicles in the trailer and need a lot of tools? Those add a lot of weight and would affect what rv would work

A typical 24-foot racing trailer, depending on the construction materials and features, would generally weigh between 3,000 and 4,000 pounds when empty, with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) usually ranging from 9,000 to 10,000 pounds, allowing for a significant payload capacity to carry a race car and equipment. There are very few class C units that would safely tow that loaded trailer. Most are built with a hitch receiver that is rated for no more than 5000#. You need to be looking at the super C models if you intend to tow the trailer fully loaded and with a car inside.

The enclosed trailer is alum framed and skinned. It weighs about 3000 lbs and I have a 1450 lb car in it. I think I have another 1000 lbs of stuff in it. The Thor 28VT has a 8000 lb hitch. We would use it for 5 or 6 races per year and possibly more when I retire :)

See if you can find out the gross combined weight rating (gcwr) of the class c. Towing that much may not leave any room to carry anything inside the rv
The Gross Combined Weight of the Thor model we are looking at is 22,000 lbs. Gross Vehicle Weight is 14,500 lbs. So the race trailer loaded is around 5500 lbs.

You might keep in mind that, in addition to the weights involved, your towing rig will need to be able to handle a LOT of wind load while traveling. RVs typically have a large amount of surface area, and that 24' trailer will also have a LOT of surface area, making them susceptible to handling problems caused by crosswinds and passing semis.

I am one of many who have a bias about anything Thor puts out. They have bought out some darn good RV names like Tiffin, Jayco, Jayco sub-Entergra, Airstream, and so forth. However, all of them have received lower ratings since Thor took them over. They seem to have given them a cheapened look and cut back on quality materials. I looked at the Geneva on YouTube, and there are quite a few review videos there, and it too looks cheesy.

There are many class C Mfgs besides the mainstream Forest River, Thor, Winnebago's, etc. Check out videos on YouTube from the just completed Hershey RV Show for some alternate suggestions.

Most Thor Motorcoach brands are focused at the entry-level market, so they are more focused on low price than best quality. Note that Thor Industries owns other brand subsidiaries that have solid reputations, e.g. Airstream & Tiffin, so it's not correct to lump all Thor products together as problematic.

If it's got the V-10 and 6 spd torqshift transmission you'll be okay. Likely mpg in the 7-8 ballpark. Who you're buying the RV from is almost as important as what you're buying, not all RV dealerships are the same.

Very much appreciate the feedback! Ok, Thor class C is. How about Thor super C or others for a larger towing capacity? Don't think we can swing new so looking at used up to 6 years old.

We bought a new 2023 Thor quantum kw29 and have had nothing but trouble. Search my posts on here and you’ll find them, people on this forum are very helpful. We sent a very detailed letter to the CEO at Thor. They responded by having a customer support person call us back. We’ve fixed all the issues DIY because of the nightmare stories you hear about the dealer having the RV more than the owners. We told them that in the letter. They reimbursed us for some of the parts we had to purchase for repairs. FWIW

A super-C is a better choice if you want a coach greater than 29 ft. The Ford E450 (or equivalent) van chassis runs short of GVWR (and thus payload/cargo capacity) as the C's get longer. A super-C is built on a medium duty truck chassis that can handle a lot more weight, both in the RV body and cargo. Usually a longer wheelbase than the van too, and that should help stabilize that long trailer.

I think you need to look around more before deciding what works best for you.

If you can find one in your price range there are other brands far better quality than the thor standard. Not every thor is bad but seems there are far more issues with most of their stuff than other brands
