Hello everyone! I have been reading and lurking for a few weeks and I really appreciate all the shared knowledge on this site. I do have a question, and hope someone can help me.

I am leaving for a road trip from Colorado to British Columbia. Being a newbie, I booked pull through sites and I am only spending one night at each stop on the way to BC. I will be leaving my TT hooked up to my truck so we can pack and go easily in the morning. We have one night that we will be staying at a friends apartment and we will need to leave the truck & trailer parked on the road. We will have a Club on the truck steering wheel and the truck has an alarm. My question is.....

What steps can we take to avoid our trailer getting stolen or unhitched from our truck? I am looking for a few deterrents to hinder theft. Is there a locking mechanism that can go over the hitch while connected to the tow vehicle? Would a boot on the TT tires be helpful?

We leave Sunday and I am worried and need to get this sorted out. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!
Carina

Welcome to the RV Forum Carina

Not sure where your spending the night that would cause you such great concern about theft of your trailer. If it helps you sleep at night you could use a boot on the trailer. But the truth of the matter is if they want it bad enough they will find a way.

On the trailer hitch there is usually a hole that you can put a lock on if it concerns you that much.
I would worry more about it getting hit or ticketed and towed if left on the street. Walmart parking lot could be a better option.

If you are worried about the trailer and the wheels have openings then you can just run a cable thru the spokes and over the axle and use a pad lock.

Thank you everyone. I was wondering if I was over-thinking the situation.  ;D. I agree, if they want it they will find a way to get it. Thanks for the warm welcome!

Hi and welcome to the forum.

We have a lock on ours. It is quite simple but probably would put off any opportunist.

Welcome to the Forum!

1.  Make sure your insurance is paid.  Make it their problem!
2.  Put a lock through the hitch.  Forget about theft, that will keep the trailer on the ball when towing!  ;D
3.  You are borrowing trouble.  Relax and enjoy the trip!

Yes, use a padlock on the coupler lever, that will keep pranksters from lifting the lever as well as being a bit of a theft deterrent.  A locking hitch pin is good for the same reason.

Where in BC are you going? 99% of BC is probably some of  the safest places to be in North America and what route are you taking? I agreed with the lovking hitch pin and coupler lock though its mostly z visual thing but kids think its funny to pull hitch pins ( and so do some truckers at truck stops if they think you shouldnt be in their space)

And leave your guns at home dont try to cross the border with them if you have any

That's exactly what they said about my home town BEFORE the murder.

Here are 2 photos of our Husky hitch lock...

If the neighborhood is that bad, why not just put the camper at a campground, and drive the truck to your friends for a visit. Not worth saving 50 dollars, and getting robbed.
