2500 HD with Duramax 6.6L TD
12,000 / 5443 with ball hitch and 3.73 axle 16,000 / 7258 with 5th wheel or gooseneck hitch and 3.73 axle

I found these lb/kg tow ratings for my truck. Do they seem correct? Truck is  2005 2500HD ext cab 3.73axle Duramax/Allison.
I want to get a 5er that will leave me room to spare as far as the weight capacity goes, because I will be towing in the mountains in the future(east and west). The dealers always seem to want to go with the max towing weight, how much should I realistically consider when looking? I do not want to put unnecessary strain on my vehicle. I would rather get a smaller nicer camper than just focus on size like some are trying to steer me. Thanks again to everyone for all of your help. Paul

The numbers for a 2006 like yours are:

GCWR: 22,000
Max trailer weight (ball & hitch) 12,000 lbs
Max 5th wheel: 15,700 (sort bed), 15,500 (long bed)

Both of the max towing numbers assume that there is nothng in the truck except the driver and full fuel tank. Anything else carried in the truck, passengers or gear, must be subtracted from the max tow capacity.
