We made reservations in February for July travel at several campgrounds on SR-75 in Idaho, beginning north of Twin Falls to US-93 at Challis, continuing on to Missoula. Now with fires and smoke in the area, we are wondering whether to cancel or reroute. If you have info, would appreciate. Thanks.

If you haven’t done it forge on. Summer fire smoke has been a problem everywhere in the west in recent years. Winds affect severity. Fires themselves rarely a threat, although we drove through one in Montana a few days ago: flames on each side of road. Trail Creek fire between Lost Trail Pass and Missoula. Fire crews divert traffic if there is danger.

Use this to track: Fire and Smoke Map

Currently in northern Idaho which is smoky but amount varies. Headed back through Stanley next week.

Larry's right, just go ahead, maintaining awareness of where the fires are. If current trends, and the last few years, are any indication, the west may be smoky for most summers over the next many years ahead, as things heat up and dry out.

Even in areas where there is heavy smoke, sometimes a shift in winds or in the weather pattern can reduce or eliminate the smoke for a while, or even a day or two (unless it's very close), but expect it to come back soon too.

And over much of the west now there is smoke from the west coast fires (even in Colorado), even though we're not currently seeing the smoke from Colorado fires (but that'll change, too).

Revelation 8:7 The first one blew his trumpet. And there was hail and fire mingled with blood, and it was hurled to the earth; and a third of the earth was burned up, and a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green vegetation was burned up.

Thank you for the info, Larry. Am excited to see this part of Idaho!
Let me know if you want suggestions on where to camp. I mostly boondock or use National Forest campgrounds.

There are two choices in (near) Twin Falls. There is a municipal CG in Twin, and the county Fairgrounds in Filer. Both provide power and water for about $20.
