Good morning and Happy Thanksgiving!

2nd day on the forum here, and 2nd question.
As I've researched I'm noticing there are a lot of maintenance things that I need to do, and greasing my hitch and wheel bearings being one amongst many I will need to do regularly. I really don't want to keep a grease gun inside my RV or just floating around the bed of my truck. Is there a good storage solution for one of these?
I've been looking at truck toolboxes, but I wasn't sure if they could be used with a 5th wheel.
I have a 8ft bed on a full size silverado, and there is plenty of room behind the hitch, but I'm more concerned about will it cause any issues while turning. Also, am I overthinking the storage of these type things? Is there a better solution? I'd like to keep the inside of my RV storage as clean as I can, and also moving things into the truck bed will help declutter from the trailer as well.

Any and all comments are appreciated!

Instead of greasing the hitch, have you thought about using a silicon disc?

Maybe one like this. Doesn't go over the bed rails.

If you had interest in a toolbox/external fuel tank combo I have one of these and like it a lot. Not much space in the storage section but using gas buddy to find cheaper fuel and filling up that tank saved us tons of money. The fuel gravity feeds into the filler cap and once the fuel level is up to the entry point it "vapor locks". No pumps or spills.

I also keep a lot of that stuff in plastic totes with lids to keep it organized and the rv clean. I have separate boxes for electrical, plumbing, sewer parts, decorarions, etc. Find the size that fits the best in your storage compartments

On the truck boxes measure carefully and depending on how the lid opens you just have to make sure it stays shut when towing the rv. The lid on mine popped open and i poked a hole in the 5th wheel front cap in a turn. Luckily i was only moving from 1 campsite to the next and only doing 5mph at the time. Adjusting and lubing the latches and lock on thw toolbox and me adding another step to verify it is closed properly and locked before i pull out fixed the problem

If you are looking at the crossbed type tool boxes, eliminate anything that isn't a low profile toolbox. Something like this....it's about 3 1/2" above the bed rails

Harbor Freight has an assortment of small hand held tool boxes.. And other boxes.. Perhaps one of them could hold your grease shooter.. Double if it has a flexible delivery tube instead of a hard one.

Northern tool has a good assortment of tool boxes for your truck. I bought this past summer. Even with the bed. Has 2 latches. No issues interfering with the 5th wheel. Mine is loaded with firewood for camping.

I've been looking at things based on some comments here, and I think I like the suggestion @rvlifer made. I believe I am going to go with one of the RDS Auxiliary Tank and Tool Box combos.

Being in a state with the highest fuel prices, it would be a good thing to be able to tanker fuel with an aux tank. It also will help on long runs thru areas with limited fuel locations, which is fairly common out west. You should have lots of room forward of the hitch for this. Again, however, pay attention to your rear axle gross weight. You will need to run the rig over the CAT scales to get weights, so you can determine how to load the trailer.

The lightest aluminum ones are 90 lbs PLUS the 51 gal (360 lb) for a total of 450 lbs without any tools or anything else.

Don't forget, you have a hitch weighing a couple of hundred also.

If it were a Dually, I would not even be posting this, but you really have to pay close attention to these weights and until you get everything settled out and not making changes or additions, you need to stay on top of the weights. Tires are your serious limiting factor. They won't take overloading for long (if that happens).

As far as grease guns go, I bought a small one that uses the 3 oz cartridges. I added a 36 inch long flex hose, and a lock-N-Lube end for the zerks, as even on my trailer I need to be able to lube a couple of swivels on the weight distribution hitch and on a longer trip, lube the wet bolts on the springs and shackles.

As you have the space, it may be best to buy a full size grease gun, as cartridges are much cheaper for them, and many different types of grease can be found (The selection is limited on the 3 oz versions).

You need to determine if you have grease fittings on the trailer suspension, Should be seven on each side. (each end of each spring, bolt where the shackles attach to the equalizer, and the pivot for the equalizer)

LockNLube Grease Gun Coupler locks onto Zerk fittings. Grease goes in, not on the machine. World's best-selling original locking grease coupler. Rated 10,000 PSI. Long-lasting rebuildable tool.

This is the grease gun and cartridges I bought, but a large grease gun may be a better choice. I have very limited room for it, so this was my choice. (the first small grease gun was bought from NAPA while I was on a trip, and turned out to be JUNK). I did not use the hose, hose end or the metal tube that came with the grease gun. I replaced those parts with the above components.

Carbyne Pistol Grip Mini Grease Gun, 3000 PSI, Heavy Duty Professional Quality, Anodized Aluminum Barrel. 12 inch Heavy Duty Reinforced Flex Hose, 4 inch Rigid Tube & Coupler. 2-Way

Thank you for this reply... A lot of good info here

To me, the best of both worlds.....RDS 60gallon alum. "L" shaped tank, with a crossbed toolbox over the top of the horizontal part of the tank. I do have a Dually, so I had some room to work with the extra weight, but not as much as some of you might think.....Momentum triple axle Toy Hauler with a 20K GVWR

I keep my grease gun in a plastic tote in the front bay. Also a set of bearings, seals and disposable gloves.

Diesel weighs 7 lbs a gallon so when my external tank is full it adds 630 lbs to the bed of the truck. Even in my dually i had to rearrange how we loaded the rv to avoid going over the weight capacities on the tow vehicle.

One nice thing about the RDS box is that it doesnt sit higher than the bed rails so as long as it fits between the cab and rv you dont have to worry about any other clearances for the rv
