My first job was at Reliance Electric in Cleveland. I was involved in designing the motor drives for the Lordstown Vega plant. They were pushing out a car every 30 seconds. 65,000 were built in the first 3 months.
A lot more parts involved in building the Vega. Maybe that's why the Vega didn't last.

Scott Galloway, host with Kara Swisher of the "Pivot" podcast pointed out Tesla sold ~ 60,000 cars in January and February of '25 while BYD sold ~350,000. Meantime Tesla stocks are in freefall. Galloway, offered the opinion that Tesla has been caught and is now being passed up in the world of EV innovation.

What does BYD stand for? Build Your Dreams?

What does BYD stand for? Build Your Dreams?
It stands for a Chinese made EV that is every bit the quality of a Tesla, sells for half the price but is unavailable to American buyers due to tariffs designed to protect Elon Musk from competition.

BYD is the company that supplied the failed transit buses to ABQ a number of years ago. So careful throwing around "just as good for half the price", you would have a hard time convincing me of that without data and an independent product teardown. I'm no Tesla fanboy but in terms of automotive engineering they make a remarkable product. You can't say "remarkable" and "china" in the same sentence very often.

Surely you're not suggesting that assembly lines can't be refined, highly mechanized, fault tolerant, safer, faster, etc...
They can be all those things and if I want to learn anything about it I sure as **** ain't looking to Tesla. Toyota, as in "The Toyota Way" has forgotten more about production line efficiency than Elon Musk will ever know. There's more to efficiency than going fast.

If I get the time today I'll see if I can do an independent product teardown of a BYD EV. Meantime, they're kicking Tesla's proverbial ass in every market where they're permitted to compete.
I recall hearing the same tired bullsh** about Japan and quality in the 60's. Then came Toyota, Nissan, Honda...how'd that work out for Ford, Chevy and Chrysler?

Actually, you are delusional if you do NOT use "remarkable and China" in the same sentence. China has already vastly exceeded US manufacturing efficiency and quality in most areas which is why they are the largest product manufacturer in the world. They are quickly becoming the dominant car manufacturer and I predict it won't be too long before they are the dominant aerospace manufacturer. And just like Japan started off with so so quality cars, it didn't take them very long to crush the US car industry. We would certainly never buy a US car/truck anymore and we haven't for 50 years.

I'm sure Tesla embraces JIT, TQM, etc... You think Elon is the only one doing the thinking at Tesla?

What's remarkable about government run businesses with no regulations?
It enabled China to create an economy only slightly second to US...the same as the US did before the US enacted environmental regulations to protect public health. And the current US leadership is all about removing all business regulations and providing them tax subsidies. And how is it that Tesla vandalism is considered domestic terrorism and children killed with AR15s only get thoughts and prayers?

The Albuquerque buses were among the first assembled in BYD's new factory in Lancaster, CA. Actually it was an old factory. BYD bought Aerbus, a small gas Class A motorhome manufacturer and used it's factory to assemble their buses to meet "Made In USA" contract requirements. They kept on the factory workforce including keeping Aerbus company founder Bill Hall to manage the plant. So you could say those first buses were built to RV quality standards.
