Tom, from the mid 20's thru 1963 the Burma Shave road signs were very popular. I was a fifties kid and can remember them with fond memories. Most roads were 2 lane and cars went slow enough to read them. If anyone does not know of or remember them, here's one of many sites that tells their story -- and how a $200.00 up front advertising budget become one of the most successful of all times.
Here's a few from when I was in Boston last year. The three actual "Mile Markers" are on the road the British marched on to Lexington and Concord on their way to the Revolutionary War. Such a historic place, something I highly highly recommend to everyone.
