Just received this note from Gary ...

"Tom, Just checking in to let you and the Forum know I'm alive. I developed an infection at the previous surgery site and ended up back in the hospital. They actually had to debride the wound area and I've been on IV antibiotics since Monday. I feel fine and am hoping to get out of hospital by this coming Monday but will still be getting antibiotic care at home for a bit. Docs want to be really, really sure it won't come back.

Didn't bring a laptop to the hospital so just using phone and reading my Kindle.

An update from Gary this morning ... the Docs are being especially cautious, and Gary has been hospitalized for a week, with follow-up 2 weeks of home care.

Hi everybody and thanks for the best wishes. I got discharged from the hospital today after a second surgery and heavy antibiotic doses. And have a vacuum seal wound bandage over the original incision area where the infection was growing. I'm still wearing the vacuum bandage so have a portable pump slung over my shoulder, much like the portable air pumps you see some people using. And I'll be getting antibiotics 3x daily as well. That goes on for 2 more weeks. [sigh].

Because of the infection and high risk of re-infection of a critical artery, the docs are proceeding with an abundance of caution. Lots of antibiotics (injections 3x daily) and the vacuum wound bandage I mentioned previously. It will be a couple weeks before I'm back to a normal life style, but at least I'm home.

Best of luck to you, and follow the medical team’s instructions to the letter! That sounds like nothing to take a chance with. We will be rooting for you.

Ain't that the truth! I was getting two antibiotic IVs in parallel, one for the Staph infection at the incision site and another for the MRSA types rampant in hospitals. Preventive maintenance. Don't need the second one now that I'm home, but I have an Infectious Disease doc monitoring just to be sure I stay "clean"..
