Upstate New York to Nova Scotia Round Trip

Maybe stops near Bar Harbor. Any tips? Maybe alternate routes back to Albany area for return trip? Is 3 to 4 weeks reasonable?

I've done the Nova Scotia trip twice, albeit some years back. Both times I left from northern Vermont. You don't say when you're leaving so can't give advice about crowds etc. I don't enjoy the Bar Harbor area in season, pretty busy place. There is a high speed ferry leaving from somewhere in coastal Maine to NS, forget where, expensive. I prefer to drive to Calais Maine and cross over to New Brunswick. Not far from there you can take a ferry across the Bay of Fundy to Digby NS then on to Peggy's cove, Lunenburg etc, Nice areas. Then head north and east through Halifax and on. If you can fit in Cape Breton you won't be sorry, it is beautiful. Return trip you may not need to ferry. Trans Canada hwy will take you back to Quebec and a crossing to NY south of Montreal. Stop in Quebec City if you can, worth a visit.
Left a lot of detail out here, but 3-4 weeks is doable. The Canadian websites are great for info, just do a search for the maritimes.

Be prepared for gas prices you've never imagined in Canada. For that matter, everything is hugely expensive there, $50 + for a case of beer!

re: taking a ferry. I suspect it's too late to make reservations with a large vehicle for this year; but if he's planning a ferry crossing with an RV he'd better begin calling now..

Lots to do in Bar Harbor. Cadillac mountain bus tour is worth taking. The town is charming and worth taking the stroll. Bring a pot and pick up live lobster from the local fisherman at reasonable prices.
If its on your way consider a stop at LL Bean in Freeport, the town has overnight RV parking available within walking distance of the stores.

Portland is another stop to consider. Also a charming town, great seafood restaurants and pubs. Also a great place to take a bus tour.

Portland, Maine is a great place to spend a day, or a weekend. Shops, restaurants, waterfront stops, brick lined streets, and back alleys that you don't know what surprises await you.

Last visit to Freeport my DW and I were a little disappointed in the store selection, and prices. Still good place to spend a day if you've never been there.
