Using Eternabond

Hi folks!
I've watched a few videos and read some topics on this, but can't find a definitive answer to my question. If I'm replacing a vent or whatever on my roof, would I use Eternabond over butyl tape, or instead of it?

EDIT: I read OP's post incorrectly - thought OP was removing, not replacing the vent and gave the wrong advice - see @Kirk 's correction as #4.

Instead of butyl. Think of "tape sticking to tape" rather than to the surface you are trying to heal.

Round the leading edges to prevent/minimize air lift. After removing and cleaning the butyl off you will need to patch the hole - Eternabond is not meant to bridge large gaps, it's meant to adhere to relatively solid surfaces with minor gaps/holes.

The butyl tape is partly a sealant, but it is also a bedding compound for the item to be mounted. In my opinion, leaving out the butyl tape would be a major mistake.

I agree. While finishing off the install with Eternabond is a very good idea, you still want to use butyl tape between the mating surfaces.

Ditto what Kirk said. Think of the butyl tape as being double-sided, basically a ribbon of sealant. It's used as a bedding compound between two surfaces.

Eternabond is a seam or joint sealer. The bottom side is extremely sticky while the top side is waterproof and a lustrous white in color, so doesn't require any further finish on top. Eternabond is available in black & gray as well.

I agree with everyone. When I have replaced items with roof perforation (vents, fans, etc) I place butyl tape around the opening, install the item and screw it in place, then cover screws and the base of the item with Eternabond. Works Great. I even used it to seal some cracks in a plastic drum yard roller.
