We are at Valley of Fires in NM and what a great park! We traveled here from Roswell, about 100 miles. It is first come first served and only has 16 sites with water and electric. Electric, at our site, 7, was 30/50. A surprise. There are a bunch of tent sites as well. We got up early to hopefully get a site. We arrived just before 11 and there were 5 or so open sites.

The park is on a ridge in the “mal pas” with beautiful views in all directions. With our NPS Senior pass it cost $18 for 2 nights.
All sites have a picnic table on a sheltered concrete pad, fire ring, and charcoal grill. Very clean with all paved roads.

Next is Truth or Consequences for Thanksgiving weekend and some hot springs.

“mal pas” is probably "mal pais," Spanish for "bad rock" and refers to the lava beds. You may see it also as Malpais Lava Flow for that area, which is left over from the eruption of Little Black Peak.

Lots of beauty in New Mexico.

There is also El Malpais national monument up on I-40 south of Grants and a Valley of Fire state park in Nevada but it is sandstone not lava beds.
