I've been told that adding vodka to the fresh water tank keeps the water fresher longer.
Any truth to this?
If so what's the appropriae ratio?

Thanks,
John

I have been known to freeze the fresh water, place it into a shaker, add Vodka and a slight amount of very dry Vermouth (to maintain a Spring-like bouquet) - by shaking the contained mixture and straining into a glass I find hydration very easy after,... say 4:30 p.m.... And, Oh My Gosh!... it's 4:37 p.m. right now!

I don't know about keeping the potable but I do have a friend that uses it to winterize the system in his boat. He does add so dye because the first time they did this, the first coffee in the spring was KILLER!

Typical vodkas are 40% ethyl alcohol, so you are adding about 13 ounces of alcohol with each quart of vodka you add. I suppose if you added enough, the alcohol content would get high enough to discourage the growth of any biologicals, but so would chlorine or hydrogen peroxide. Vodka has the advantage of being tasteless, but it's a rather expensive way to purify water. Peroxide would be a lot cheaper (it's not heavily taxed like potable alcohol).

What  were you thinking?? 👀
A momentary lapse of sanity led me to believe that if I drank diluted vodka I could have an extra cocktail in the evening. :) The freezing slushed up the contents so much that I had to let it sit out for 20 minutes to melt it enough to pour. :( Well, by golly, I don't have that kind of time so I never strayed again. ;)

Everyone does understand that the OP was making a joke, right.
Hard to know; this comes up several times a year on irv2.com. Urban myths abound.
Freeze cheapo Vodka to smooth out the taste according to the article I linked. Then again the author might be spitballing, she also said water freezes at 0°F, yet claims to be a expert bartender. She also addresses your more cocktails thought.
