First, to answer your question....no I don't have a manual.

So here are some basic questions I have...

Now, I know how to start the water heater by lighting the pilot but does the water heater turn off by itself or do you shut off the gas to it?

Will it shut off after a certain time period?

Do you leave your water heater on while traveling?

The water heater has a thermostat that will shut off the gas when the water is heated to the thermostat setting.  These are not usually adjustable.  I don't run my water heater on gas while travelling as there is good chance the burner will be blown out, and although that shouldn't cause a gas leak, why take the chance?  Also, you'll want to have all gas appliances off when fueling, and this is just one more thing to forget.

It does have a heat adjustment lever and I have it set on the low position for safety reasons.

Turning it off is done how, do you have to shut down the entire LP tank?

"Turning it off while traveling and refueling" Good point, make sense now that I think about it...!

Thanks Ned... ;)

You should have a switch to turn the propane hot water heater on and off, if it's a DSI ignition.  If you have to manually light the pilot light, then the gas is turned off outside on the hot water heater.
