Water pump question

DonTom has it right. This is a good reason to use the pump even when hooked up to city water, as serves as a telltale sign if a leak should happen.
 
Well city water may hold the pump off..But for assorted reasons I filled the on-board then disconnected city water and used the pump

Look for leaks, and one place to look is the water heater (Wet it should not be under the thing)

Another leak is the pump's check valves which can be an "undetectable" leak to find this one Hook up to city water and watch the level in your fresh tank.. If it's going up up up (Slowly) pump check valves.
 
Your water pump turns on and off by pressure so something is causing you to lose pressure in the water system. Most likely it is either a water leak somewhere or the pump is in need of rebuilding. RV water pumps also work like a check valve and sometimes begin to leak back to the tank when older. If the pump is the problem it can probably be rebuilt as many of them have rebuild kits available.
