Water pump working intermittently.

Members tackled a persistent issue where an RV water pump worked intermittently, despite fuse and switch lights functioning. The original poster described swapping pumps, checking fuses, and observing that the pump would sometimes work for days, then fail again. Multiple experienced RVers suggested causes including loose wiring, faulty pressure switches, or a failing pump controller—especially since the RV had three momentary switches, indicating a controller was likely... Since we have multiple problems and I'm pretty sure I have the FLU, I called a mobile rv repair guy to come and look at the water pump, the Onan genny, the Honda genny and levelegs. He suggested a new carburetor for the Onan. Suggested our 15 year old Honda should be replaced. Sprayed some kind of cleaner in the Honda and started it up. Claimed the water pump had a loose connection. So the water pump worked when he was here. Of course after he left it was back to the same intermittent thing. So $210.00 for nothing. That's the reason I hate taking it for service.

Today, Onan runs for maybe 15 to 30 minutes before cutting out. I started the Honda genny and it's running at least for now. The water pump is continuing to start intermittently.

If I'm feeling any better later today, I'm going to change the plugs and oil in the Onan. I'm also going to put a switch on the water pump. If I can find a 12 v light I'll do that as well.

The joys of RVing with a 20 year old motorhome.

Replaced the pressure switch yesterday. Pump worked fine for a few hours and then stopped. It has not come on since. Checked the inline fuse before the pump and the fuse for the controller. Both are fine and yet I have no power to the pump. Can't find a pump controller locally so I'm going to run a wire from the battery and leave the ground as is.

Water pump still turns on and off from bathroom momentary switch. However the pump keeps running until we turn it off.

Kevin of UTTransplant checked it out and it looks like the pump needs to be replaced. We're going to connect the old Shurflo 6 gpm pump tomorrow to see if that works. If not, we'll pick one up Thursday when we bring the Pace in for service. In addition to the water pump, the Onan Marquis genny, the Atwater jacks and the main Slide topper needs work. Just a few of the things getting in the way of an otherwise wonderful 2 weeks on the road.

Got a new water pump this AM. Works like a charm until it stops. Same problem as the old pump and pretty much confirms the controller is the problem. Couldn't find one locally so I'll have one shipped when I get home. For now I have it wired it directly to the battery and grounded to the chassis. It's always on but works like a charm.

All that you need is a lead to supply 12V, via a switch to turn it on and off. Since it cycles on and off with a pressure switch you don't need to turn it on or off unless there is some reason to do so.
May not have been necessary but for $8.50, why not. Picked up a switch and connected it to the 12v feed. Now it's an easy on and off.

Could it be a low voltage problem? mine has done it once in awhile also. If I turn it off and give it a few moments it comes back on. I always wondered if it was a thermal (too hot?) Shut down? I rarely use mine. I did tear it apart but never tested the voltage drop......just a thought.

It's possible and I didn't think to check the voltage. Then again, I'm about as good with a volt meter as a monkey with a keyboard.

As mentioned before we left on this trip, it started every day for maybe 10 days. Didn't run it long but it just started and ran for a few minutes. When we got to Quartzsite, same old problem. For now, I'm going to replace the Controller. It's a $75.00 plug and play part.

That said, if it's a voltage problem, then the new controller will do the same thing. If so, what could be the cause?

Can't imagine a water pump putting out more than 40 to 50 PSI of water pressure. That's usually the pressure we have when connected to a parks water and using our pressure regulator.
Make sure the water pressure regulator is actually working properly if you can.
