Water Y-fitting… non potable?

Does anyone really think the Chinese pay attention?
Only those that state that they are certified for potable water use. Always look for the NSF certification label, which guarantees that the fittings meet the safety criteria for potable water use. Brass fittings without this certification may or may not contain lead, which can leach into the water supply.

I had a tough time finding a water diverter valve for my Tiffin Allegro Bus when the on board one failed because most I looked at all stated "not potable water safe". Even the brand Tiffin recommended as a replacement had the not potable warning on it!

The biggest problem I encountered was that I was looking for a type that had molded holes to mount the valve with. All I found said not potable. I wound up going with one that was potable but had no mounting holes. I fashioned a bracket out of metal plumbers strapping tape and it worked fine.

Unfortunately MANY different countries making products for the US will comply and put any certification ID mark on the product that you want when the product is ordered in mass. Policing it is near impossible, and expensive to test. Remember the fiasco with Lumber Liquidators and their Laminate flooring? An under cover crew went to China and interviewed an employee under the guise of making a large flooring purchase and needing it to be formaldehyde free. The contact person at the factory showed the potential buyer a package showing the "formaldehyde free" sticker on the product. He also admitted that no testing was done on the product, but it had a sticker. That cost Lumber Liquidators tens of millions of dollars in law suits.

The bottom line is "buyer beware".

Never worried about garden hoses or connections. If they aren't safe to use around the house, then they aren't safe to drink from either. So far, nothing around my house, inside or outside, has started glowing green in the dark .... including me! But hey, I only made it to 70 years old and been sick only once in the last 20 years, what kind of an idiot am I???? Who knows, it may finally kill me when I reach 105 years old!

In my own defense, I didn’t go looking for the problem… and wouldn’t have thought twice about using the fitting if it hadn’t printed NOT FOR POTABLE WATER on the package. Which I missed when buying.

EPA says lead slows children's development. I assume that leaves us octogenarians free and clear.

And we swam in polluted rivers and streams, played outside in the mud and dirt and ended up healthier than kids njowadays not exposed to those things. You can't build up immunity by sitting inside all day playing on a phone all day.
I worked in a hosptial maintenance department for 33 years and was exposed to a lot of nasty things.
Very seldom get a cold, flu or other now rampant diseases.
My only real problem is my aches and pains from being 77 and doing manual labor for all those years.

Lead pipes weren't banned in the US until 1986. So anyone born before then was probably exposed to lead pipes. The big problem in Flint MI was they switched the source of water. It was more corrosive and dissolved lead into the water. I would worry more about the lead in gasoline we were exposed to.
