Having trouble retracting my awning. the controller is bad and is obsolete . I think John had the same problem and I am hoping he could share what his fix was . 04 vectra

Gosh, that was a long time ago. I'm fairly certain the fix on Dometic's nickle was to replace the control box. Before you pronounce your control box dead, check the awning motor with the bypass 12V cable that should be included with your documentation. I've been meaning to tear into my box to reverse engineer it - at least the motor voltage source but haven't done that yet. Have you looked for a schematic?

Thanks John  I think a new control box is in order and the original is obsolete , will have to figure out how to wire the replacement. Motor works fine and I have 12 volt coming into the box.

I was able to find a control box from a selvage yard in Missouri . Lucky, hard to find .

I'm having the exact same problem. Somehow the arms got bent, mainly the forward arm.  It's curved and I can't figure out how that happened. I gotta replace those arms.

Its the gas shock. Have you ever tried to compress it? I can drop my full weight on it and it doesnt budge

Don't think it's the gas shock. It retracts about halfway then stops. I give it a yank, it retracts the rest of the way. When fully retracted you can see the main arm is bent/curved. I was thinking vandalism but over the last week our weather here (very windy and rainy) plus age of the awning (original, 15+ years old) indicates it sagged with water weight and wind bent it.

I'm going to go with a full replacement...

Trust me, that curve was caused by the force of the shock. We go camping for friends with a Journey all the time and his are curved as well. Good luck on replacements.. i called the factory last week and was told they have no more replacement parts except the motor.

If yours is binding, check that all the spacers on both sides of the shock are intact; it shouldn't move horizontally at all. I?m missing 3 of them and manufacturing my own based on those still there. Mine was also binding and I stopped it with nylon zip ties until my spacers are cut to size

Yep, direct replacement isn't gonna happen. The guy doing the work is assembling various parts to re-make it. The plastic section nearest the sidewall (that wraps around the awning when it's fully retracted) is the only part that can be reused.

It was binding, now it's not. I think the torn awning material released some stress on the frame...

Got the new Awning done!  Turns out my old awning wasn't the original. The original had been partially fixed/upgraded (whatever). Now it's working great!
