I drive a 2024 chevy 2500 and pull an East to west 30 foot TT. 1st trip of the year this weekend, and I lost to L clips for my weight distribution hitch. Went without the trunnions. No noticeable difference! Is the WD hitch even necessary? Is the extra weight worth it?

The manual states up to 20,000 lb. trailers do not require a WDH.

You might not have noticed a difference but what conditions were you driving in? Did you have emergency maneuvers where the impact of the reduced weight on the front end might have caused understeer, particularly in wet conditions? Did you go through crosswinds or have semis passing at high speed to see if sway was still controlled?

If the hitch were correctly set up you most certainly would have felt the difference. WD hitches help with damping of porposing of the trailer over RR tracks and undulations in the road at bridge transitions and the like.

What brand and model hitch do you have?

Did the dealer set up the hitch? From reading comments on forums, I've concluded most have no clue how to set one up.

It does sound as though you didn't have the hitch adjusted properly. The hitch should be adjusted such that the truck and trailer sit level while parked. If the truck drops with the tongue weight it is not correct.

Probably not needed on a 2500. What is the trailer GVWR and what "weight carrying" rating is given for the hitch receiver? I doubt if the tongue weight on your trailer exceeds 1200 lbs and that should be well within a 2500's payload and hitch receiver capacity. Every 2500 configuration I see has more than 3000 lbs of cargo carrying capacity, so as long as the receiver itself can handle the tongue weight, it should be fine. The 2500 should be equipped with a 2.5" receiver and those are typically rated for more than 2000 lb of weight carrying. Some brands run 2700+ lbs.
