What Are Beef Prices Like in Your Area?

The Amish farm near us raises an Angus/Hereford crossbreed known as "Black Baldy" or "Black Hereford". Black Baldy has the better marbling of the Angus, combined with the tenderness of the Hereford. What is favored in other parts of the country, or by you?

We raise a similar Hereford Angus mix on our family cattle ranch in Louisiana as they are more heat tolerant than many other breeds

Well, believe it or not, since I've been in Louisiana for the last 2 and 1/2 years, (stay for a few months and then go back to Indiana for a month or two and then come back again for another long term stay), the price of beef has been daunting both at home in Indiana and in Louisiana!

But, do you remember the television advertisement encouraging viewers to eat the "other white meat?" Well ... I kind of finally figured out what the "other white meat" truly is. Actually, it's not as expensive as beef ... what is it? Well.... alligator! It's delicious!

Here in Canada is not that different. Average beef price has increased 15% (ground beef) to 39% (striploin cuts) over the past year. I am not eating beef any longer due to health reasons, so it hasn't impacted me that much.

Coffee, on the other hand...That, I drink quite a lot, and the inflation has not been kind to coffee prices either. (20-24% average increase over the past year).

"Old tough alligator?" ... It must have been fixed wrong. What I've had was tender, flakey, and really good. Taste like chicken ... no, actually, the texture reminds me more of shrimp than chicken. Breaded and deep fried like "chicken nuggets" at McDonalds, it was more like eating a deep friend tater-tot. It's hard to explain. It might sound gross, but then ... eating frog legs sounds awful too! (Is that another "white meat?") I suppose one just has to hang out in Louisiana a while to finally get the nerve to try it. Snake? I'd really like to try that too!

An example; around my area a quality 3-yr old cow with a calf by her side will bring near $4,000. Having just one cow die can break a small outfit.
When a herd size is reduced, for whatever reason, it requires a minimum of 7 years to rebuild the herd to the original size, in some cases up to 14 years.
If someone got out of the cattle business entirely, my first sentence prevents re-entering the business.
Some areas are still recovering from the Mad Cow disease era. (that's when I got out)
Today there are strict requirements regulating breeding, herd maintenance, and vaccinations, and even movement between farms.
Cattle ranchers do not set sales prices, the middlemen set selling price.

Frog legs in the USA are usually large and deep fried and have little taste. Much like fried chicken.

Frog served in Hong Kong are fresh small frogs...and taste exactly like one would expect a frog to taste like. Much like the frog smell. A bit on the fishy side. Nothing like chicken.
