Members shared practical advice for selling a 38' 2003 Mountain Aire motorhome located 1,000 miles from the owner. The most recommended approach is to use a reputable consignment dealer near the RV’s location, with PPL Motorhomes in Texas highlighted for their specialization in used RV sales. Several RVers cautioned against private sales due to the risk of scams, especially when selling remotely. It was also suggested to research similar listings on RV Trader to establish a fair market value...

My father passed and I have inherited his 38' 2003 Mountain Aire. I live 1000 miles away and I am interesting in the best strategy in selling it. I was going to keep it, but many monthly campgrounds will not allow motorhomes over 20 years old. It is in great shape and my dad had just had the roof redone a year before he passed.

If you are set on selling, contact an RV dealership near where the RV is located, and inquire about the dealership selling for you ‘on consignment’.

If the RV is in really good shape appearance wise, most RV parks/campgrounds don’t care about age, why stay at those places anyway? Screw that nonsense.

Thank you for your response. It is unfortunate, but in Texas where campgrounds are in huge demand, more and more are implementing the 20 year rule.

I will contact an RV dealership and see if they want to sell it on consignment.

^^What @Mr Lars said^^
Consignment or selling directly to a dealer is what I would do from 1000 miles. Private sales are fraught with scammers.
But, if you’re thinking of getting into an RV, and this one’s been well cared for and maintained, it may well be the cream puff so many are seeking. Is it a diesel pusher? (Without a model, I see it that could be gas or diesel by your description.) Parks that restrict for age are kinda rare, you won’t have any trouble finding places to stay.

Thank you for your response. The Motorhome is a Gas powered engine, I don't know the displacement. The motorhome is located in Texas and campgrounds are very much in demand that is why multiple quoted the 20 year rule. I have the title here, so I will have to look up the VIN to figure out the model of the Motorhome.

If the motorhome is in Texas, PPL Motorhomes is a large dealership that specializes in selling used RVs under consignment. Their website explains how the process works.

Go to RV Trader and see if there is anything similar. You’ll want to know what it’s worth before talking to a dealer. It may be worth let’s say 10,000 and the dealer may say 5,000.
I would call 2 or 3 dealers

Since I live in TX, I am wondering where you got your information? There have been some RV parks that require any RV older than 10 years to pass an inspection to stay there, mostly the long term, snowbird type of parks. I don't know of any that restrict stays of less than a week.

Where in TX is the RV, as we can probably suggest a place near that location if we knew where it is. PPL does have 4 locations in TX, 2 near Dallas/Ft Worth, 1 in Houston and 1 a bit north of San Antonio. There are also several other consignment dealers who have a good reputation.

Mountain Aire IS the motorhome model - the brand is Newmar. The VIN won't tell you even that much - the VIN is created when the chassis is built and Newmar buys their motorhome chassis from another company. The VIN will, however, tell you the chassis builder and the chassis model. The 2003 Mountain Aire Class A (gas-powered) is built on a Workhorse W22 chassis. See the brochure here.

Using a local RV dealer for consignment sale is sometimes fruitless. The dealer's sale force almost always make more money from selling the dealer's stock than the consigned unit, so they tend to ignore them. Ditto for the dealer sales manager. However, Texas is the home to PPL Motorhomes, an agency that specializes in consignments and only sells used RVs. If you can get the motorhome to a PPL site, odds are they will soon complete a sale for you.

Don’t you have to clean it out? There must be some things you would want to keep.

Since we've had our 2005 motorhome, we've only been denied by one park. State, local and National parks do not restrict RV's because of age. The Newmar gas Mountain Aire is a high end gas motorhome. Keep it and enjoy.
