What is the purpose of this weatherstrip?

This long piece of rubber weatherstripping goes around the outside of the door. It’s not inside the door sealing anything, it’s not on the edge of the door sealing anything, it’s literally on the outside of the door away from the door frame and goes all the way around……

What’s the purpose of this?

Thats not a weatherstrip, its a decorative cover to cover up all of the screw heads underneath it. That is part of the door frame, literally the frame is fitted into the opening and screwed in place and the strip is installed and covers the screws.

The material is easily replaced, available in different colors and widths. I replaced all of my yellowed white with black for added contrast to an all white fiberglass trailer.

Google RV vinyl insert trim for dozens of hits. Generally you will find 3/4 inch and one inch wide (measured when flat). Do not measure the width of the opening but measure across the inside of the channel. I think the trim you are showing is 3/4 inch. Looking at my trailer, the door frame is black and Bigfoot used black vinyl trim insert around the door. The belt line trim, where the top and bottom halves of the trailer were mated together used the one inch wide, and that is where I used Black instead of the original white.

The white and many light colors yellow in UV so black provides color contrast and eliminates the yellowing issue. When replacing it, I put one edge in and used a wooden tongue depressor to run the other edge in. Do not try to pull it thru from one end, too much friction, that won't work. when done, cut it off long and allow it to sit for a day or so. Possibly "push" the molding" together so as to shorten it. Allow it to shrink and find its own place, then finally install the end screws. The stuff will shrink like crazy and you have to have the end screws in it.

Here is an Ebay listing for a multitude of different colors as a sample kit, which includes part numbers and size/length of rolls they sell also.

This is an Ebay listing for size and color samples for a different type of molding filler (see pic) that may be useful also.

This is a good example of how the flat or nearly flat trim fits into the extruded channel.
