Lots of experience here with motorhome owners towing 4 down. Wondering what folks consider their favorite make/model/year of tow vehicle?

The newer ford trucks have a neutral tow setting built in, very simple to implement.

I've towed a '90s Ford ranger 4X4, a 2008 Honda CRV and a 2014 Ford Edge.

The ranger was the simplest because it only had to be put in neutral.

The Honda had several steps you had to follow and both speed and time limitations, so does the Edge.

All of them are MUCH better than using a trailer or dolly.

Not to mention renting a car in Hood River. We got stranded on the road to Mount Hood.

We've towed Toyota RAV 4's since 2008 without a problem. We equipped them with a Remco transmission pump to keep the automatic 4WD tranny lubed while underway. Unfortunately, Remco discontinued the pumps when CVT's became popular.

You are asking for TOW vehicle. Right?
Not towED vehicle.

Hmm , I gotcha the first time. Didn't even notice the writing. But I was wondering if the vehicle had to come with wheels.

Rene the "towing 4 down" expression refers to a toad with all four wheels on the ground (also called flat towing), and is 4 down vs on a dolly or on a trailer.

Has to be the toad...

I've only towed two vehicles, one being a 2003 Jeep Wrangler Sport and the other being a 2015 Jeep Wrangler Sahara. The latter is a bit easier because I didn't have to leave a key in the ignition since the steering wheel doesn't lock. It also has a MUCH better ride and a few extra amenities. Both were very easy hookup (put xfer case in neutral, xmission in park) and allowed off-roading as well as running errands, sightseeing, etc.

Our 2012 AWD CRV works well but I usually drive a pick up at home. Would like to have a full size PU as a toad but our current rig can only pull 5K.
When your rig is rated to pull 5k the manufacturer is assuming you are pulling a trailer that will put 500#(tongue weight) on the hitch. Towing 4 down put very little weight on the hitch, the only concern is the amount of mass affecting the hitch as you stop or start suddenly. Hmmm

We tow either a Grand Cherokee Trail Hawk or an F-150 4x4. The GC is marginally easier to set the transmission, and it is a very comfortable SUV by itself. The F-150 is still comfortable, and we can carry more things in it. Harder to find parking in an urban area though. Both weigh about the same - 5,300-5,400 pounds. Add in the UTV we put in the pickup bed, and the weight of the F-150 is closer to 7,000 pounds. Still fine for my DP, but way too heavy for most gas and some smaller DPs.

I assumed a full size PU would be too close or beyond 5K capacity of my rig since ?
