My grandson shot a wild goose/geese the other day. I had some tonight for the 1st time. It was really good. He thought it was a little tough and I thought It was tender. Tasted a little like beef

What a mess it was on I-80 WB. I am sure glad I was going east.

Yeah, one can feel a bit smug when going in one direction and passing mile after mile of backup traffic trying to go the other way. "Ah, poor bas***ds".

But, karma being what it is, that smugness vanishes when it's YOUR direction backed up for miles with traffic on the the other side rolling merrily along... :(

YOUR direction
But with some of the events, such as Burning Man, I know to not leave Auburn for Reno when it starts and Vice Versa. But the opposite direction is always fine.

Being retired means we have choices. And I can always make a U-turn and go back to the house that I left from. But I only recall doing that one time, many years ago. In a car.

In CA, lane-splitting (driving in the same lane as the cars to my left or right and passing) is legal on a motorcycle. CA is one of the few states where such is legal and saves a ton of time when lanes are reduced for road construction and other such common issues on I-80. Traffic not moving, I ride between the cars--even when I see a cop! Very commonly done in CA.

Lane Splitting is Illegal here in Nevada. More often needed in CA anyway. Besides, by far, most of my motorcycle riding is in CA--even when I start from Reno.

When I first moved to Texas (from SF, CA) I was lane splitting on the way to work. After traffic stopped some (and I say this with all affection) good ol' boy redneck pulled up beside me and read me the riot act. I just looked all sheepish and asked "You mean it ain't legal in Texas?" He said "Son, where you from?" I told him California which, of course, started a whole other um... conversation. That was 30 years ago.

we did a quick visit to the beach, weather not really good but I did manage to get the wife on
one of our electric bicycles for short adventure.

Wow, I was just getting ready to say it's way too early for goose season, then I looked up the NH regulations. Apparently, Canada Goose season started Sunday.

Yes, goose is good. I find the meat fairly tender, but the flavor is milder than duck - not as gamey. I don't have to prep it as much as duck before I cook it.

Here in Coleman County Tx(west end of the ‘Hill Country’) it rained most of the weekend, and still on/off showers today. Over 8” so far since early Friday.

I've had the Chinese Duck many times, I like it a lot.

But I wonder how a game duck from the USA would compare. Never had an opportunity to try it.

Hey, I have an idea--you can substitute a wild game duck for that steak you owe me! :)

If you want an interesting experience try "Bombay Duck".. LOL

Well, the week-end is now past, but we spent Labor Day at home. NOW!!! That's not a bad thing. We spent Jan, Feb, Mar 2024 in Louisiana at the Audubon State Historic Site. I served as a tour guide for the historic plantation hosue.

We did return back to Indiana for the month of April, and then back to Audubon for May and June.

At the end of June, we headed straight for Pilot Mountain State Park (North Carolina) where I served as a camp host for the months of June and July.

We departed Pilot Mountain on August 31 (Saturday) and drove straight home.

On Sunday (Sept 1) and Monday (Sept 2 - Labor Day), I worked on the property at home, mowing grass, trimming trees, weeding, edging, and getting the yard back in shape. Although my son was living in the house, he didn't attend to the yard very good. No problem though, we live int he country, so it doesn't matter if the weeds grow over the house.

Still, I worked fiendishly to whip the yard back in shape. On Labor Day itself, I burned a gigantic pile of cut tree branches in the fire pit to get rid of all the stuff I cut and trimmed. It took hours to burn it all.

Anyway, it was nice to be "home". Coming home was more like a vacation after knocking myself out working as a camp host after 7 of 8 months prior.

Now.... on Sept 21 we are heading out for Nebraska and then on Sept 27, heading from there, back to Louisiana for another round at the Audubon State Historic Site for Oct, Nov, and December.

So, it was actually kind of nice being home working in MY OWN yard and not working for someone else for a change. The change in venue was nice!

Yes, wild duck is nowhere close to farm-raised duck in the way of taste. And I would take you up on that offer, but I think my duck hunting days are behind me. Living where I do now, other than being well off the migratory flight path, there aren't a lot of ducks to be found in the desert other than at the local park. And I'm pretty sure the authorities would frown on my sitting on the bench with a bag of bread crumbs in lieu of decoys and blasting away at the barnyard fowl in front of the kids.

I will get some dove and quail hunting in, though, but not until next month. I have to live here for 6 months in order to be considered a resident and able to buy a resident sportsman's license and that's not until Sep 28th. Before that date I can only buy a non-resident license which would run me about 4x as much. I screwed up and created an account on the AZ Game & Fish website when we first moved here and was honest about when I actually arrived. I could have told them sometime in February, because we actually put a deposit down on the apartment and had the power put in our name then, but at the time I didn't know they would be so anal about the resident thing and I didn't know about it anyway.

And dove season started this past Sunday so I woke up to hearing non-stop shooting from the fields surrounding the apartment complex (there are corn and alfalfa fields on three sides) - off in the distance, of course, and I'm champing at the bit to go.
