I seem to remember I paid a few grand for my 1968 Pontiac GTO convertible way back when. Sold it after a few years for less than I paid for it (of course). Had I only been more patient, Iooking back maybe I should have covered it up in a barn someplace:

The first car I ever owned got totaled on Day #5, on I-80 coming back from Soda Springs, CA towards Sacramento, right about Cisco Grove. On hindsight, it wasn't much of a loss - it was a 1973 Pinto Hatchback. I guess I'm lucky it didn't blow up on me.

Now my 2nd vehicle - 1971 Chevy Chevelle Malibu. Yeah, I should have kept that in a plastic bag, too. If I'd have kept it completely stock and low miles they're going for about $60,000 these days. I paid like $1200 or $1300 for it in 1978.

I grew up in Detroit where they used heavy salt on the winter roads. The body panels and even the frames rusted out after 10 or 15 years so hard to find older cars from that area unless they have had serious metal work restoration and/or didn't see snow. Sadly, its likely that my first car (1967 GT6) rusted out and was scrapped. However, the guy I sold it to told me that he was going to do some restoration...so maybe it's still around.

Sitting in my workshop/hangar. 1970 Mustang fastback, and dad's 1967 Falcon 4dr Futura.

Will have to scare up pics of them. They are not in a condition now I want to take pics of (covered in dirt, etc)

My first and last car from 1973 to 1980. Pickup trucks ever since.

1968 Mercury Cougar. Got stolen. The thief did a burn out with both rear tires laying a patch of black rubber down our steep street. Our neighbor had a 1968 Dodge Charger in the background. He tailgated my Merc up the street and so I put the peddle to the metal while opening up my headers. He couldn't keep up with my High Performance Ford V8. 100 octane premium lead gasoline recommended per the owners manual.

1955 Pontiac 4 door sedan. I bought it when I was 16 years old. I was born in April, it was manufactured in June of the same year. Back then, a 1955 model was made in 1955. I paid $100 for it, drove it for 2 years and sold it for $50. It had so much rust on it, the headlight had nothing to hook into to. My dad rigged up a hook for it to hold it in place, but the attachment was completely rusted away, as was much of the rest of the body.

I never new what became of that car, but I imagine it ended up being used in a demolition derby, as the person I sold it to participated in demolition derbies.

My first car was a 1953 Chevy with 105,000 miles that I bought for $280. Dad wanted me to spend about twice that for a 1956 Ford, and I should have listened, since this one threw a rod after about 2 weeks, and it cost $180 to get it overhauled. Still, I loved that thing:

Looks like you should have jumped on that mower a couple weeks prior. ;)

My first two cars are now washing clothes or keeping food cold somewhere. Early 90's GM stuff... a Lumina, a Cavalier...cars designed to be driven and then recycled.

The Camaro I had at the end of high school was totaled shortly after I sold it.

The only reason I bought a 1961 Volvo PV544 in 1968 was because it looked like a miniature 1940 Ford. A real chick magnet :D Sold it in 1988 because parts were hard to get plus my new wife claimed it for herself in 1975. I always wondered if she married me to get my car and worried it might be a rooster magnet  She didn't miss it much because then she appropriated my 69 Chevelle SS396. I had to buy a 78 Firebird for myself which I still have. But I traded the wife in for a newer model in 1992 :p
Or maybe I was the one who got traded

To make a short story long, in 2012 my son took a picture of the Volvo in a salvage yard in Denton TX. Definitely was the same car with my custom front bumper and blue metallic paint. All the parts were still there and the body was still straight as an arrow. It sure was hard fighting the urge to go rescue it.

1961 Chevy Malibu straight 6, 3 in the tree. Paid $200. It got crushed. I know because I took it to the crusher - LOL...

Biggest PITA was that the fuel tank had to be removed. California 105* summer, my buddy and I in the scrap yard parking lot cutting the tank straps. I think I got like $30 for it...

Any car that I've ever owned never had much left when I was done with it. I've driven a number of them to the moon (~239K miles). "Classics" aren't normally considered so until long after most built are consumed and disposed of. My dad said he had a 55 chevy coupe, said it was a race between the body rotting out or the engine giving up. Problem with the idea of buying something and mothballing it is just like with RV's, they age out whether you drive them or not so it would have to be a pretty rare production model for it to be worth more than you're losing to inflation and lost opportunity. I think the best of both worlds is to buy a car you really love and enjoy driving it while it still runs.

She looked just like this. Bought her in 1985 for $1500 when I arrived in Honolulu for my "gap year". I loved that friggin car even though she truly lived up to the Fix-It-Again-Tony name! We had sooooo much fun. I shudder to think of how many times we woke up in the morning and had to go look for her! (Nobody really thought much about impaired driving back then...I won't have a single drink and drive now!) I couldn't afford to take her to the mainland when I left, and wouldn't have had the cash or space to store her at school, but I sometime look at "for sale" listings and think...hmmmm, should I?
