Members shared frustration over a group leaving significant trash at a scenic campground, sparking a broader conversation about campsite etiquette. Many RVers emphasized the importance of the "leave no trace" principle, recounting personal habits like picking up litter, involving children in cleanup, and double-checking sites before departure. Several recalled family traditions or camp host experiences that reinforced respect for nature and community spaces.

While most agreed that the...

As I aged I was taught to clean as you go in any project. Don't remember the first camping trips, however I'll bet it was Dad and I with a tent and open fire cooking. Best memories were Saturday's after chores, friends would get together and ride horses 5 to 15 miles then camp overnight on the river side. Cook what we caught or killed in a iron skillet on the fire. # 1 rule: Always pack out all trash leaving the place clean.

Absolutely true that they have jobs but calling the still working RV folks, Weekend Warriors and claiming that most of them are messy campers is very unfriendly. My son is now 58 years old, his children are grown, he retired from the Army after 24 years and now works at a different job. He started RVing with a popup when the kids were small, then moved to a hybrid, then to a fully self-contained trailer and a couple of years ago to a much larger trailer and with 6 weeks of vacation per year he does do more than weekends. When we were family camping and when camping with the Boy Scouts, the rule was always leave a site cleaner than you found it. He has raised his two children to camp in the same manner. The indicating that only retired people are clean and courteous campers is outrageous and offensive.
Wow, I agree with everything you said but your question was why doesn't the younger crowd stay active on this forum? I was making an observation. Before I retired I was either working or camping. I had little time to spend on this forum.

But I was a Boy Scout and learned to leave no evidence behind. I believe irresponsible people come in all flavors, young, old, retired, or working. Somehow their parents failed to teach them right from wrong.

In my experience, age has very little to do with trashiness. 50 years ago I saw as many middle aged and older folks trashing sites and leaving fires burning as I did younger folks. That comparison still seems to be true. I remember my 8 year old daughter listening intently to the ranger at her first Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness pre-trip to learn the rules (we had gone over the with her and the other kids earlier). We were on our first day, maybe 2 hours from our put-in, and she saw a middle aged group washing their dishes with soap at the lake’s edge. She said just as loudly as she could, “Mom, those people are doing bad things! They are washing their dishes in the lake!” Nothing like an 8 year ol scolding you from 200+ yards away!
Maybe they were using eco-friendly soap.. ???

OK folks, this AI re-writing titles is getting out of hand. Why on earth is this allowed?
From what I remember, the title used to say something about leaving trash behind.

Now, "why do campers leave campsites behind" title means something completely different . . . and nonsensical. How would a camper take a campsite with him???

Goofy.

I'm not sure who changed the title. It doesn't make sense at all now. 🤷🏼‍♀️

@Tom

Unfortunately this happens when they provide campsites but nowhere to throw out garbage. "Most" people have no problem with this, but your average weekend warrior seems to.

My music festival used a mountain top away from all the other campers during the same week every summer for 35 years. One time we were a week after a church group. Disgusting doesn’t even begin to cover what they left. They didn’t want to pay the fee for a port-o-potty and were too lazy to walk to the ‘flushies’. There was human excrement and toilet paper in nearly every bush. The head ranger saw to it that they were fined and barred from the park for life.

Public campgrounds and parks are the worst. I don’t know why some people have to disturb everyone around them and trash the environment.

This is not political, but some politicians go on and on about "Entitlements" (which actually is somethign different. This is only setup I"m not talking about what they are talking about)

But some folks think they are "Entitled" and do not have to clean up after themselves.

And frankly some religious groups are among the worst.

Others will clean up after themselves. Some will even help you clean up. (Or clean up after others).

This applies to most every area of life.
Some neighbors are Good folks. Some not so good.,
Three of the neighbors I had when I lived in Detroit.
One was a Cop, his son lived next door to him a fireman
One was a deadbeat (Fireman bought that house in fact)
One a drunk driver and one dealt in Illegal drugs.
(The cop and fireman had moved by then)
(Can you believe the drug dealer was packaging his product in full view of a person standing in the driveway waiting for his ride to the car dealership wearing a state police varsity jacket?)
Can you believe when got to work I called Narcotics?)

Some people are good and decent .... Some not so much.

There is nothing new about that. Having been a campground host in 7 different states, I assure you that it hasn't changed and probably never will. But there are still more good people than bad and that we usually find what expect to find.

Down in Louisiana I had a lady riding with me on a business trip. She threw her tissues out of the car window. When I asked her how she could do that. she replied that they pay people to clean that stuff up!!!!!!
Can you imagine????
