I am new to this group and the RV world. I have a 1991 Beaver Contessa and need to replace the seal in the windshield.  Where do I get a new seal?  The glass place I called said it may be glued in instead of a rubber seal.  I don't think they wanted to work on the coach they were afraid of breaking the glass.  I have a few other places to call, but thought I would ask.

Thanks,
Joe

I had my windshield replaced by RV Glass Solutions 1-888-777-6778 last year while we were in Phoenix. The company is HQ'd in Oregon. I was impressed with their knowledge and service. I would encourage you to call them and ask for a local-to-you installer. They will know a company near you that has the knowledge and skill to do it right with the right parts.

The fellow that does auto windshields may not be who you want. You want someone with large truck and motorhome experience.

Thanks for the reply Ken.  I did call RV Glass solutions.  Was told any installer would have problems getting the glass out and I should plan on replacing both of them at a total cost of $3,000, installed of course.

Every RV is different. Which is why you want an expert. I thought my 5' by 8' one piece was expensive at $1800. My rubber gasket could be cleaned up and reused. My installers said that you don't want to change the gasket until you have to. Apparently getting the right length, size and fit is a tricky job. Three grand seems high, but there must be something to justify it. I guess if it were me I'd keep calling and see if I could figure out why the price was so high.

You might call Monaco/Navistar and ask them.  When you call, have your coach number in hand.  Because it's a 1991 they might not have your specific coach info., depending on whether they got all the Beaver records when Monaco acquired Beaver in 2001, but it's worth a try.  At least they might be able to give you some tips on what type of seal to use.  A lot of RV techs are in Oregon and Indiana (Wakarusa area) because they worked for the old Monaco, Country Coach, and other coach manufacturers that went south during the recent recession.

Why? What is it doing that makes you want to replace the seal?

I am looking to replace the seal because I have a small leak on top of the window.  It looks like someone tried to repair it before with not so great results.  Thanks for all the replies.  I am going to make some more calls using the suggestions I received from this post.

While replacing one side of our windshield replaced on our last Tradewinds the seal was found to be deteriorated and unusable. The installer got Progressive to pay for removing the other glass and installing a new seal for the entire windshield without any particular issues with removing the glass.

If it is a small area you can get a small tube of sealer similar to what they use to glue windshields in. Just mask it off so it will look neat when you are done. I would use a plastic knife or sharpened toung depressor to gently pry the edge up to get the sealer under the edge.
