Off to the Gulf Shores for the winter. What is the best supplemental heat source for the living quarters?

That really depends. In my travel trailer, I use electric space heaters because we get free electric and I have the propane hooked up to the grill because that's all I use it for since I don't cook on the stove in there. In my motorhome I use the furnace , I use the furnace because it runs on propane, which I have a ton of, and it's so easy. Also, if I used space heaters, I would need to run the generator for electricity since we aren't hooked up to anything.

Down to 40 degrees or so our Heat Pump/ Gas Furnace works just fine.  Our propane tank lasts several days if it's cold enough to not use the heat pump.  However if it gets colder, (and yes, we have stayed in the coach down to 10 degrees), we have an electric radiant heater that we plug in up in the front of the coach.  It supplements the gas furnace keeping the living area a little warmer while we like the bedroom cooler.

Of course that's if we are plugged in to shore power.  We also have to be careful not to try and run the radiant heater and my DWs toaster oven at the same time as it will pop the circuit breakers.

We always used both the furnace and an electric heater.  However, we almost never ran the electric heater as I was always concerned that it could cause a fire.  Also, we keep the temperature cool and use a down comforter, with the furnace set cool so that it comes on only occasionally.

When we stay somewhere it?s not going to be real cold at night but just maybe cooler like the gulf coast, we try not to use our furnace much. If we are boondocking we use our buddy heater. If we have electric hookups we use our fireplace and a ceramic space heater. We do sometimes use the furnace at night set very low but it seems to heat up over the setting getting quite warm then shuts off and won?t kick back on until it drops quite a bit below the setting. We just don?t like the temperature swings on the furnace.

Yeah we NEVER run the space heaters unless we are in view of it so that IF there is a fire, we can quickly extinguish it. I literally won't even go outside to get something out of the car with the heater on.

I really don't see the fear of electric heaters.  We run ours with no regard for fire.  The circuits are protected with breakers and if the heater draws too much power it will simply shut down.  Just don't place it next to anything flammable.  The gas furnace could be just as big a risk.  Carbon Monoxide?

Jim, glad that you are ok with the electric heater but there have been a lot of fires from poor wiring overheating and the breaker not tripping.  Maybe it is just me being over cautious, but the furnace vents outside the coach, distributes the heat better through the ducting and will not start a fire if something accidentally falls onto the element.
