I got some supplies at lowes today and part of that was the last 2x6 for my fence.  When i got home i went to put the board on the fence and something was different.  The board was wider than the others.  So i measured it and sure enough it is 2x7 1/4    Not sure how often this happens but i assume the mill somehow cut it wrong and it just made it past inspection and into the bundle.

I have never seen this before, really wierd, tommorrow ill rip it down to a 2x6 like the others and use the extra for stakes.

Both the 2x6 and 2x8 would have the same thickness, usually 1-1/2 after milling. The 2x8 would be 7-1/4" wide while the 2x6 would be 5-1/2" wide.

Somebody tossed a 2x8 into the 2x6 pile and you happened to grab it. Not an unusual occurrence at a self-serve lumber yard.

your answer is lacking the OP states the board is 2 inches thick not 1 1/2  so it cannot be a traditional 2x8.

When you want a 2 X 8 you don't say I want  1 1/2 X 8. It's a 2 X 8.

The OP STATES THAT THE BOARD measures 2 by not 1 1/2  therefore it is not a traditional 2x 8 a traditional 2x8  measures 1/ 12 x 7 1/4  again the op states:  "So i measured it and sure enough it is 2x7 1/4 " notice he says 2 x 7 1/4
So I stand by my original answer

Yes it is thicker than the other boards (its acutally 2" thick) but i dont have any tools to fix that.  But i did fix the width.  It looks fine up there now, unless you look closely you wont even notice because of where i put it on the fence.

When I go through Texas in October I will look out my window and see if I can spot it ;D

Yeah my dad teased me about that too lol.....  I am also making a area in the back surrounded by brick and filled with gravel.  When i bought this land it was just a sink hole where the installed the sewer and it had standing water in it.  So all the dirt from my 14 fence posts i put in there and made it level.  Anyway i got one row or bricks done late yesterday and i did stand back about 20 ft to be sure they were lined up and even but i did not go all the way out to the street to look at it, and i should have.  Looking from the street down the row of brings its really angled and looks wierd, it looks like this \.  My dad teased me about that too, he said well you better get packing they are gonna kick you out of there for it not being straight.... lol      I just like everything to be symmetrical, if i leave it that way it will bug me, so ill fix it and move the one end over...  noone will notice but me but it will bug me if i dont..

But looks right up close.

Yep, perspective gets me every time I back my rig into a campsite.  Everything looks nice and straight in the mirror, then I see the truth when I step out and look from another angle.

Don't you mean 1 1/2 x 7 1/4?
