    LA Area

I checked out their online reservation website - nice looking but not cheap!  $65 / night for a site, plus a one-time $10 on-line reservation fee.  Pricey for a county park.

    Anza Borrego

The guy who finances those metal statues (Dennis Avery of the Avery Label family) has a web site about his estate in Borrego Springs and the statues here: http://www.galletameadows.com/

    How Far South?

True story from when I moved from New Hampshire to the Los Angeles area 10 years ago.  I was telling the folks at my new job how I had to sell a lot of my home and garden gear, as it was no longer necessary in my new L.A. home - things like my lawn tractor and attachments, roto-tiller and snow...

    Maiden voyage tonight!

The Norcold in my Trailmanor Elkmont only has options for 120VAC and propane - no 12VDC.  Clearly it has 12VDC circuitry so you can boondock on propane,  but no 12VDC heater element. Not all RV refrigerators have all 3 options.  I'm not disagreeing with previous posts, just clarifying.

    replacing/augmenting mattress in TT?

We were unhappy with the thin foam mattress that came with our Trailmanor Elkmont, so we bit the bullet yesterday and spent $340 on a short queen Parklane Eurotop mattress from the local Camping World. It gets very high reviews on their website.  We installed it and really like it. We'll be...

    Feeling jipped

We used to live in New Hampshire and felt the same way.  Even though the payments still were due monthly, most campsites opened in mid-May and closed on Columbus Day. 5 months' use for 12 months' payments....  AAARRRGGGHH!! One reason that we were willing to go back to camping here in Southern...

    Why a 3-Way vs a 2-Way Fridge?

Please define what you mean by "2-way".  It sounds like you want an all-electric refrigerator that will run on either 120VAC or 12VDC,  but no propane.  To my knowledge, a standard RV "2-way" fridge has 120VAC and propane as options, but no 12VDC. Am I correct as far as what you are looking for?

Can you use Draino in the septic tank?

If you go the yeast / bacterial compound route, I would add warm water to the holding tank to speed the activation process (ideally 100  to 115 degrees F).  Cold water will slow the activation process down and too hot of water will kill the yeast / bacteria.  The warm water may help loosen...

    Honeywell Generator

The decibel scale is logarithmic, so a 60 db sound is 10 TIMES noisier than a 50 db sound.  see http://www.howstuffworks.com/question124.htm The difference between 57 and 63 db is bigger than you think.

Portsmouth NH to Bar Harbor - Any must-sees?

Drive to the top of Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park before sunrise - excellent views at sunrise of the Porcupine islands and ocean.  One of those scenes you'll file into your mental photo book.  Plus you'll be able to say that you were among the first in the U.S. to see the sunrise...

    West coast driving

I agree with all of this except that the highway is not called Highway 30 east of 57.  It changes from an interstate designation to a CA highway designation but the route # remains the same - 210 - all the way to Redlands and the intersection with 10. Highway 30 still exists as city streets...

    Harley Davidson

I live not too far from where brens is located. We relocated to California from Boston in 2000. The first time you're subjected to lane splitting, it's a pretty jarring experience.  Even after a few months of driving where it is allowed, I felt like it was an accident waiting to happen. You're...

    West coast driving

What Orick says.  The 101 is fine.  It's the PCH (Highway 1) that has long, windy, hilly stretches that could be difficult for a rig.

    RV/Camping References

I second the use of the RV park reviews website.  One does have to be careful with some of the reviews and ratings, though, which can be based more on emotion than facts.

    Campground Salem Massachusetts

I was born and raised in Salem, but had no idea that they had made a campground at Winter Island.  I remember as a kid, that's where the Coast Guard station was.  You learn something new every day...
