Austin to Big Bend - Route & Camping Advice

FYI:  Off hwy 377 to US 90 is Del Rio, Texas, and a nice little park:  Hidden Valley RV Park 830.775.0045, and less than a mile from the park is The Whitehead Museum where Judge Roy Bean and his son are buried, along with the oldest Texas Winery; The Val Verde Winery.  Lots of cultural things to...

Does the Amazon Associate Program really make money?

We created a lot of websites back in the day before we retired, and unless you have an enormous following or user base there is no affiliate program on the Net that you'll make any money at. (Unless you create an app like Pokemon Go) They are not set up for you to make $, they are set up to...

    DMVs cracking down regarding addresses?

One of the things we did was to mail ourselves - one to me and one to my SO - a letter at the PMB address.  Once we showed the letter with the PO cancelled stamp, there were no more questions.  I guess if the USPS found the address acceptable, the DMV accepted it. Don't know if this would work...

What are you paying to travel?

We full-time, have been for a year now....  As for the cost, before we left we figured out a budget.  Fuel Approximation at $.$$ a gallon based on how many miles driven / to drive Monthly Food Allowance for 2 Monthly RV Maintenance (If not used, then saved for when needed.) Monthly Necessities...

    I'm scared.....

We just hook up a clip-on fan at night pointed toward the bed and that keeps things nice and cool at night. (less noise than the AC, too.)  And, we also have the luxury of following the weather, whereby we are in SD or ND or somewhere north during the summer, and south during the winter. ...

Hints, Tricks and Gadgets/Tools --- small ones.

Don't know if this has been said, but think Pool Noodles for covering windshield wipers to keep the sun from dry rotting the rubber.  Works great!  Just cut them to fit. (you may need to slice them down the center, but they will still work just fine.)  We also run our water hose through pool...

    Notes from an Ex-Newbie

Most Excellent Post! I would add: Before you leave on your journey, replace the plastic vent covers with metal ones so that after a hail storm you are not driving down the road with a large hole in your roof.

    Tool box

Rope or para cord long enough to pull a bag up to the roof - in case you need to do any repairs up there.

    Sharing The Road With Semi's

In the end, whether it be flashers, turn signals, weight, and so on, first and foremost while on the road is your own safety, and the safety of others around you.  Stay alert, be aware, look ahead.  Keep a head of it. <-- First thing always pounded into the heads of truckers. My thanks to all...

    Saying Hello!

SD is a gorgeous state, for sure! Lots to see and do in SD.  Not going to stay the winters, though. :)

Yep, we do the same thing.  Every truck parking space is at a premium overnight.  Very few cars stay overnight in the car lot.  Tucking away in a corner like you said in the car lot leaves a space open for that truck that has to shut down. I would leave here a caution about stopping overnight...

    Sharing The Road With Semi's

Only in California....(sigh)  I doubt very much they would pull you over for using your emergency flashers if you were using them correctly.  Every trucker is taught to use their emergency flashers going up hills / mountains, or if they come upon an emergency situation.  If you find yourself in...

Tony - are they still driving tractor trailer?  And have tags for their truck?  In some states, you can have it if you drive "Farm", are a yard jockey, and in some you can keep your CDL license and just not drive OTR. (Over the road)

If you are following them, they can see you and know you are there if you can see their mirrors.  If passing them, they can see you if you can see their face in the mirror.  Once you lose their face, they may not be able to see you. Get around them quickly, and give yourself and them lots of...

    Sharing The Road With Semi's

On Following A Semi Rig.... Especially in bad weather - know that they are struggling with the snow / fog / rain / night time / construction just like you are.  They have no advantages - and even less than you do. They will follow each other at night, especially on those long and lonesome...
