Yes, I have done it before, though only when enough room to slide cover off. Just make sure when starter off, bendix gear still intact, as well as spring a metal washer. I have found them to have come apart, will have to get them out if that's the case. Not trying to be negative, just informative.

If pressures are low, compressor WILL NOT kick in, even a loose Schrader valve could be the culprit for the leak, but as said by others, let a pro look at it. If pro says compressor bad, ask how they determined that? They are expensive and no need in "Throwing parts at the problem", if not...

Curiosity had me speculating that the gas valve possibly not opening all the way. I have tapped on them in the past, they opened completely and flame hotter, therefore creating more of boiling effect. Does not always work, and I very well may be way off base with this suggestion, but then again...

Have you tried tapping on gas valve??

Totally agree with Captsteve and Ned. When you replace valves, only snug bolts, after testing tighten to satisfaction and/or to correct any possible leaking as they can crack easily. I also like to use a bit of vasoline on seals, to help keep in place and also for possible lubrication for lining...

Try tapping on primary and secondary gas valve at furnace. Sail switch working or would not cycle. Possible secondary valve not opening all the way. Fridge, have you tried on gas and electric?

Either it has a transfer switch ( Automatic ), or possibly unit plugs back into itself where shore cord hatch is.

Why does it need replaced? Is the 12volt side not working? Can  a stand alone be installed? Is A/C not working? Just wondering?
