I have a 3500 watt propane generator for my TT. I carry it in my pickup and when I need it I just hook it up to one of my TT propane tanks. It does a good job.
I built a box for my generator out of plywood and 3 inch soundproofing material on the inside. I covered 3 sides and the top. Didn't work the generator got so hot it smoked. Wasted my money.
As stated the tank sensors have been an issue for years. Here is a new product that sounds like it may resolve the problem, http://www.horstmiracleprobe.com/index.php. I may install them on my tanks but am waiting to hear more reviews and feedback.
That is the way I always go but not during heavy traffic times, morning and evening. I usually hit the NY area around 4-5 AM. No tunnels or height restrictions.
I had a SeaEagle SE8 http://www.seaeagle.com/motormountboats.aspx and loved it. Took about 20 mins. to set up. Folds up into a small package and easy to carry. I have used it in the Atlantic Ocean off Florida, in small streams and rivers. Great little boat.
