Most RVers are good respectable people that willing to help others.  There still can be crime at campgrounds but I feel safe.  During one trip someone had broken into a trailer in mid day while other campers were out and about.  The rangers thought it might had been a drifter.

Renting an RV for a few trips can be worth the investment.  You can find out what you like or don't like about a floor plan but also if RVing is a good fit or not.  Buying an used RV can be a good investment too. Just watch out for signs of water damage.

Hi there from another member in SoCal!  x2 on what SurgeW said! This site was a big help to me when I first became an RV owner.  Unlike you I didn't have any experience but members here just jumped in and offered help.

Forums are a wonderful resource for answers.  This is one of the best boards on the web.  When I was new to being an RV owner this site helped me a lot.

Consider renting an RV before buying to see how RVing fits into your life style. It's a good way to get some experience in without worrying about your own unit.
