Probably had more to do with the exploder trans then selecting a lower gear going down hills. They are a notoriously weak unit.

I would look for a broken centering pin or bent spring. With leafs on all 4 corners I would not be allarmed on 1/4" or so but 1" is a bit much.

There are 2 types of high pressure fuel pump one is a roller vane and the other is a gear rottor. Both of them use a volume differential principal. Both use very high tolerance parts to seal while operating. As these parts wear the tolerances get looser and this causes some "slip" if you will...

Easy drive but the wind near Cabazon can blow hard when it is calm else where. I do it regularly and often lug a max load thru Julian from Temecula so you can too. Just slow down don't get in a hurry and if you feel the need stop and wait it out you have what you need with you anyway.
